The University of California- Irvine's policy on sick leave is as follows: "Regular career employees who are employed on a 12-month basis and Academic Personnel who are appointed for more than six months are eligible for paid sick leave. The amount of sick leave to which a regular career employee is entitled is governed by the provisions of the Memorandum of Understanding between the University and the appropriate labor union. For Academic Personnel, sick leave accrues at the rate of 12 hours per month for a total of 144 hours per year. Sick leave may be used for illness, injury, medical, dental or optical appointments, or for the care of a family member. Sick leave will be charged in increments of no less than one-half hour."
