What is the history of Schlotzsky's?
Schlotzsky's was founded in 1971 by a man named John Provost, who had previously owned a small sandwich shop in Austin, Texas. The original Schlotzsky's restaurant served just one sandwich, the Original, which was made with a combination of smoked ham, salami, cheese, lettuce, tomato, and mustard on a freshly baked, toasted bun. The restaurant quickly became popular and began to expand, eventually becoming a franchise in 1983. Schlotzsky's continued to grow and, by the early 2000s, had over 500 locations across the United States. In 2006, the chain was acquired by Focus Brands, the company that also owns Cinnabon, Carvel, Auntie Anne's, and Moe's Southwest Grill. Today, Schlotzsky's has more than 350 locations in the United States, and their menu has expanded to include sandwiches, wraps, salads, pizzas, and more.
