The Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC) is a public medical school in Charleston, South Carolina. It opened in 1824 as a small private college aimed at training physicians. It is one of the oldest continually operating schools of medicine in the United States and the oldest in the Deep South. The school's main building was designed by Charleston architect Albert W. Todd. The school has expanded into a state university with a medical center and six colleges for the education of health professionals, biomedical scientists, and other health care personnel. It also operates as a center for research and has a public hospital.

Universities and Colleges provide students with the skills to compete in increasingly global workplaces and are themselves, significant employers. They are the breeding ground of innovation and entrepreneurship. In partnership with government and business, academic research and technologies help to drive an array of vital industries. The main functions of colleges and universities are predominantly two-fold. One is as educational establishments and the second as generators of knowledge and technology. As educational establishments, it is to provide able, self-directed learners that are independent and confident and will go out into society and give to the community through leadership or civic duties. As knowledge generators, they are research institutions there to provide new knowledge, to change paradigms, to aid society in its development and in meeting new challenges as they come along.

MUSC medical school scholarships: One student's journey to becoming a doctor

Most medical school students graduate with both a desire to make a difference
and significant student loan debt to repay. “The debt is looming,” said Carly
Reynolds Hall, M.D., a 2026 graduate of the Medical University of South Carolina
(MUSC) College of Medicine.

In this video, Reynolds Hall shares how scholarships helped offset her tuition costs
so she could focus less on finances and more on becoming the best doctor she can
be.

How scholarships make medical school more affordable at MUSC

At the Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC) College of Medicine, training future generations of physicians is the top priority. But the cost of living and other rising costs are making it more challenging for medical students to pursue their calling.

“Forty percent of our students graduate with more than $200,000 of medical school debt,” said Terrence E. Steyer, M.D., dean of the MUSC College of Medicine and vice president for Medical Affairs. “That’s a huge payment to make.”

Scholarships can offset the costs so that future physicians can go into their residencies less worried about paying off student loans and more focused on gaining valuable experience.

This Is How We Innovate

At the Medical University of South Carolina, reshaping the future workforce means preparing healthcare professionals with the knowledge, compassion and commitment to make a difference in the communities they serve.

For MUSC student Taylor Williams, that commitment is personal. Inspired by the healthcare needs she witnessed growing up in rural South Carolina, Taylor is preparing to become the kind of provider who listens, connects and gives back. Through a collaborative learning environment focused on both excellence and empathy, MUSC is helping prepare the next generation of healthcare professionals to meet the needs of patients and communities across South Carolina and beyond.

At MUSC, we’re not just preparing students for what comes next. We’re reshaping the future of healthcare.

Reshaping the Future Workforce Through Students Called to Serve

At the Medical University of South Carolina, innovation moves forward through collaboration, curiosity and a commitment to transforming human health. For Lyndsay Young, Ph.D., that means using cutting-edge glycobiology research to better understand cancer and uncover new possibilities for diagnosis, prognosis and treatment.

From joining MUSC as a postdoctoral fellow to advancing her research as a faculty member, Dr. Young’s journey reflects the power of team science and mentorship. Working alongside physicians, scientists and collaborators across MUSC, she is helping pioneer new approaches to understanding how cells change in health and disease — while mentoring the next generation of scientists who will carry discovery forward.

At MUSC, we push the boundaries of what’s possible, translate discovery into impact and bring together people and technology to create a healthier future.

Driving Innovation Through Research to Transform Care

At the Medical University of South Carolina, empowering healthy communities starts with people who turn their passion into purpose. For Stephanie Myers, MD, a formative experience with a patient inspired a career in radiation oncology—and ultimately brought her to MUSC, first as a resident and now as a physician and faculty member.

At MUSC, Dr. Myers found the opportunity to develop her own voice as a physician, learn within a collaborative team and help advance innovative approaches to cancer care. Today, she is carrying that experience forward by caring for patients, contributing to the next generation of expertise and inspiring future physicians to make a difference of their own.

Her story reflects what’s possible when education, innovation and patient care come together to improve lives and build healthier communities.
