Job Description

We are currently seeking a highly experienced Senior Patent Counsel or Senior Patent Agent to join our dynamic legal team. In this role, you will play a crucial role in protecting and managing Genentech's intellectual property portfolio, while collaborating closely with internal teams and external stakeholders.   1. Oversee and manage Genentech's intellectual property portfolio, including patents, trademarks, and trade secrets.
  2. Conduct thorough research and analysis to determine the patentability and potential value of new inventions and discoveries.
  3. Draft and file patent applications with the relevant patent offices.
  4. Maintain and update existing patents, including responding to office actions and conducting patent prosecution.
  5. Collaborate with cross-functional teams, including R&D, business development, and external partners, to identify and protect valuable intellectual property.
  6. Conduct due diligence and provide legal guidance on intellectual property matters related to licensing, partnerships, and acquisitions.
  7. Monitor and analyze industry trends, competitor activities, and changes in patent laws and regulations.
  8. Develop and implement strategies to protect Genentech's intellectual property and minimize risks.
  9. Review and negotiate agreements related to intellectual property, such as licensing agreements, joint development agreements, and confidentiality agreements.
  10. Provide legal advice and guidance to internal stakeholders on patent-related issues.
  11. Manage outside counsel and ensure effective and efficient use of external resources.
  12. Collaborate with global legal teams to ensure consistency and alignment with Genentech's IP strategy.
  13. Participate in and contribute to the development of Genentech's patent policies and procedures.
  14. Represent Genentech in patent litigation and other legal disputes related to intellectual property.
  15. Serve as a subject matter expert on patent law and provide training and guidance to other legal team members and company employees.

Job Qualifications
  • Extensive Legal Experience: The Ideal Candidate For A Senior Patent Counsel - Senior Patent Agent Position At Genentech Should Possess A Juris Doctor (J.d.) Degree And Be A Registered Patent Attorney With At Least 8 Years Of Experience In Patent Prosecution And/Or Litigation. This Experience Should Include Working With Biotechnology Or Pharmaceutical Patents.

  • Strong Technical Background: A Senior Patent Counsel - Senior Patent Agent Should Have A Strong Understanding Of The Scientific And Technical Aspects Of Biotechnology And Pharmaceuticals. This Includes A Bachelor's Or Advanced Degree In A Relevant Field, Such As Biology, Chemistry, Or Biochemistry.

  • Patent Strategy And Portfolio Management: The Senior Patent Counsel - Senior Patent Agent Will Be Responsible For Developing And Executing Patent Strategies To Protect Genentech's Intellectual Property. This Requires Experience In Managing A Large Patent Portfolio, Including Drafting And Prosecuting Patent Applications, Conducting Patent Searches, And Providing Strategic Patent Advice.

  • Team Leadership And Collaboration: As A Senior Member Of The Legal Team, The Senior Patent Counsel - Senior Patent Agent Should Have Experience In Leading And Managing A Team Of Patent Attorneys And Agents. They Should Also Be Able To Effectively Collaborate With Cross-Functional Teams, Including Research And Development, Business Development, And Regulatory Affairs.

  • Knowledge Of Patent Law And Industry Trends: The Ideal Candidate Should Have A Deep Understanding Of Patent Laws, Regulations, And Industry Trends Related To Biotechnology And Pharmaceuticals. They Should Also Be Able To Provide Guidance On Patentability, Freedom-To-Operate, And Patent Infringement Issues. Continuous Learning And Staying Updated On Changes In Patent Laws And Regulations Is Also Important.
