What is the American Battle Monuments Commission?

The American Battle Monuments Commission (ABMC) is an independent federal agency that was established by Congress in 1923 to commemorate the service, achievements, and sacrifices of U.S. armed forces. ABMC administers, operates, and maintains 25 permanent American burial grounds and other monuments in foreign countries, including 14 World War I cemeteries in Europe, six World War II cemeteries in the Pacific, and two in North Africa.
