  1. Maintain and enhance the overall appearance of the university's outdoor spaces, including grounds, gardens, lawns, and planters.
  2. Perform regular maintenance tasks such as mowing, weeding, pruning, and planting to keep the campus looking neat and tidy.
  3. Collaborate with other members of the grounds and maintenance team to plan and execute projects and events, such as seasonal plantings and campus beautification initiatives.
  4. Monitor and assess the health of plants and trees, identifying and addressing any issues or diseases in a timely manner.
  5. Operate and maintain equipment and tools used for grounds maintenance, ensuring they are in good working condition and reporting any malfunctions or repairs needed.
  6. Assist with the procurement and installation of new plants and landscape features, ensuring they are properly cared for and integrated into the existing outdoor spaces.
  7. Communicate effectively with other departments and university stakeholders to understand and meet their landscaping needs and expectations.
  8. Ensure compliance with safety protocols and regulations while performing all job duties.
  9. Keep accurate records of work performed, materials used, and any issues encountered on the job.
  10. Stay up-to-date on industry best practices and new techniques in grounds and nursery services, implementing them as appropriate to improve efficiency and effectiveness.
  11. Train and mentor new team members, providing guidance and support to help them succeed in their roles.
  12. Represent Washington State University in a professional and respectful manner at all times, promoting a positive image of the university to all visitors and stakeholders.

Job Qualifications
  • Experience In Horticulture Or Landscaping: Candidates Should Have A Strong Background In Horticulture Or Landscaping, Including Knowledge Of Plant Care, Soil Management, And Pest Control.

  • Knowledge Of Plant Identification And Maintenance: A Thorough Understanding Of Plant Identification And Maintenance Techniques Is Essential For This Role, As The Specialist Will Be Responsible For Caring For A Variety Of Plants On Campus.

  • Ability To Operate And Maintain Groundskeeping Equipment: The Job May Require The Use Of Various Groundskeeping Equipment, Such As Lawn Mowers, Trimmers, And Leaf Blowers. Candidates Should Have Experience Operating And Maintaining This Equipment.

  • Physical Fitness And Stamina: This Position May Involve Physically Demanding Tasks, Such As Lifting Heavy Objects, Kneeling, And Standing For Long Periods Of Time. Candidates Should Be In Good Physical Condition And Able To Perform These Tasks.

  • Attention To Detail And Strong Work Ethic: The Grounds And Nursery Services Specialist Will Be Responsible For Maintaining The Appearance Of The University's Grounds, Which Requires A Keen Eye For Detail And A Strong Work Ethic. Candidates Should Be Able To Work Independently And Take Pride In Their Work.
