Job Description

Are you a highly skilled American Sign Language interpreter with a passion for education and healthcare? UVM Medical Center is seeking a dedicated individual to join our team as an Educational Interpreter. In this role, you will have the opportunity to use your expertise in ASL to facilitate communication between healthcare professionals and Deaf or hard-of-hearing patients and their families.   1. Provide accurate and timely interpretation services in American Sign Language for educational and healthcare settings at UVM Medical Center.
  2. Facilitate communication between healthcare professionals and Deaf or hard-of-hearing patients and their families.
  3. Collaborate with healthcare team to ensure effective communication and understanding of medical information.
  4. Maintain confidentiality and adhere to professional codes of conduct and ethics.
  5. Stay up-to-date with current medical terminology and procedures to accurately interpret information.
  6. Advocate for the rights and needs of Deaf and hard-of-hearing patients in the healthcare and educational settings.
  7. Adapt to various communication styles and preferences of patients and healthcare professionals.
  8. Provide support and assistance to Deaf and hard-of-hearing individuals in understanding and navigating the healthcare system.
  9. Participate in ongoing professional development and training to enhance interpretation skills.
  10. Maintain accurate and organized records of interpreting assignments and adhere to scheduling and reporting protocols.
  11. Collaborate with other interpreters and team members to ensure consistent and quality interpretation services.
  12. Promote equal access to education and healthcare for individuals with hearing impairments.
  13. Establish and maintain professional relationships with healthcare professionals, patients, and their families.
  14. Follow UVM Medical Center's policies and procedures related to interpretation services.
  15. Demonstrate a commitment to cultural competency and sensitivity in working with diverse populations.

Job Qualifications
  • Fluency In American Sign Language (Asl): A Qualified Educational Interpreter Must Possess Advanced Proficiency In Asl To Effectively Communicate With Deaf And Hard-Of-Hearing Patients And Their Families.

  • Knowledge Of Medical Terminology: The Ability To Understand And Accurately Interpret Complex Medical Terminology Is Essential For An Educational Interpreter Working In A Healthcare Setting.

  • Certification: A Valid Certification From A Recognized Organization, Such As The Registry Of Interpreters For The Deaf (Rid), Is A Must For An Educational Interpreter At Uvm Medical Center. This Certifies That The Interpreter Has Met The Necessary Standards Of Competency And Professionalism.

  • Experience In Educational Interpreting: Previous Experience In Educational Interpreting, Specifically In A Medical Or Healthcare Setting, Is Highly Desirable. This Demonstrates The Interpreter's Understanding Of The Unique Demands And Challenges Of This Role.

  • Sensitivity And Cultural Competence: Working With Diverse Populations, Including Those Who Are Deaf Or Hard-Of-Hearing, Requires A High Level Of Cultural Competence And Sensitivity. A Qualified Educational Interpreter Should Demonstrate An Understanding Of Deaf Culture And Be Able To Adapt To Different Communication Styles.
