- Utilize advanced knowledge of ASL and medical terminology to accurately interpret complex medical discussions and procedures.
- Maintain strict confidentiality and adhere to HIPAA guidelines when handling sensitive medical information.

- Continuously develop and expand knowledge of medical terminology and procedures in order to provide the most accurate interpretation services.
- Serve as a cultural broker and advocate for deaf and hard of hearing patients, ensuring their needs and rights are respected and met within the medical setting.
- Remain up-to-date on all relevant laws and regulations related to providing interpretation services in the healthcare field.
- Communicate effectively and professionally with patients, medical staff, and colleagues to maintain a positive working relationship and promote a welcoming and inclusive environment.
- Attend trainings, workshops, and conferences related to ASL interpretation and medical terminology to continuously improve skills and stay current in the field.
Fluent In American Sign Language (Asl): The Ideal Candidate For This Position Should Have A High Level Of Fluency In Asl, Including Knowledge Of Various Dialects And The Ability To Interpret Complex Medical Terminology Accurately.
Certification In Medical Interpreting: The University Of Washington Requires All Medical Interpreters To Hold A Recognized Medical Interpreting Certification, Such As The National Board Of Certification For Medical Interpreters (Nbcmi) Or The Certification Commission For Healthcare Interpreters (Cchi).
Knowledge Of Medical Terminology: In Addition To Fluent Asl Skills, The Candidate Should Also Have A Strong Understanding Of Medical Terminology In Both English And Asl To Accurately Interpret Between Healthcare Providers And Patients.
Cultural Competence: As A Medical Interpreter, The Candidate Must Be Able To Navigate And Bridge Cultural Differences Between Patients And Healthcare Providers. They Should Have A Deep Understanding Of Deaf Culture And The Ability To Adapt To Various Communication Styles.
Experience In A Healthcare Setting: Previous Experience Working As A Medical Interpreter In A Healthcare Setting Is Preferred.
