- Conduct regular inspections and maintenance of signaling equipment, including switches, signals, and track circuits, to ensure they are in proper working condition.
- Diagnose and troubleshoot any issues with signaling equipment, and perform repairs or replacements as needed.
- Utilize technical manuals, diagrams, and computer systems to accurately diagnose and repair signaling issues.
- Maintain accurate records of all maintenance and repair work, including equipment usage and inventory.
- Follow all safety protocols and guidelines while working on or near railroad tracks and equipment.
- Coordinate with other team members, including signal maintainers and train dispatchers, to ensure efficient and safe operation of trains.
- Keep up to date with advancements in signaling technology and attend training sessions to enhance knowledge and skills.
- Respond to emergency situations and make necessary repairs to keep trains running safely and on schedule.
- Identify potential safety hazards and report them to the appropriate supervisor.
- Collaborate with other departments, such as track maintenance and engineering, to plan and execute maintenance and repair projects.
- Adhere to all company policies and procedures, as well as federal and state regulations, regarding signaling maintenance and repair.
- Maintain a clean and organized work area, and ensure all tools and equipment are properly maintained and stored.
- Act as a resource for new hires and provide training and guidance as needed.
- Participate in on-call rotations and be available for emergency callouts as necessary.
- Represent the company in a professional and courteous manner at all times, both on and off the job.
Knowledge Of Railroad Safety Regulations: A Signal Maintainer Must Have A Thorough Understanding Of Railroad Safety Regulations, Including Those Set By The Federal Railroad Administration (Fra) And The Occupational Safety And Health Administration (Osha).
Electrical And Mechanical Expertise: Signal Maintainers Must Possess A Strong Background In Electrical And Mechanical Systems In Order To Troubleshoot And Maintain Complex Signal Equipment.
Experience In Signal Maintenance: Candidates Should Have Previous Experience Working With Signal Systems, Such As Installing, Repairing, And Maintaining Wayside Signals, Grade Crossing Warning Devices, And Switch Machines.
Communication And Teamwork Skills: Strong Communication Skills Are Essential For A Signal Maintainer To Work Effectively With Other Rail Workers, Signal Maintainers, And Dispatchers. The Ability To Work As Part Of A Team Is Also Important For Completing Projects Efficiently.
Physical Fitness And Ability To Work Outdoors: The Job Of A Signal Maintainer Can Involve Working In All Weather Conditions And In Physically Demanding Environments. Candidates Should Be Physically Fit And Able To Perform Tasks Such As Climbing Ladders And Working At Heights.
