Job Description

The University of New Mexico's Center for Southwest Research (CSWR) is seeking a dedicated Library Assistant to join our team. As a Library Assistant, you will play a vital role in providing access to our diverse collections and assisting researchers with their information needs.   1. Manage and organize collections: The Library Assistant will be responsible for managing and organizing the Center for Southwest Research's collections, which may include rare books, manuscripts, photographs, and other historical materials. This includes cataloging, shelving, and maintaining the physical and digital organization of the collections.
  2. Provide research assistance: The Library Assistant will be responsible for assisting researchers with their information needs by providing guidance on accessing and utilizing the collections. This may include locating and retrieving materials, providing research tips and resources, and answering reference questions.
  3. Preserve historical materials: The Library Assistant will play a critical role in preserving the Center for Southwest Research's collections by handling materials with care, following preservation procedures, and monitoring the condition of items.
  4. Maintain records and databases: The Library Assistant will be responsible for maintaining accurate records and databases of the Center for Southwest Research's collections, including acquisition and circulation records, to ensure efficient retrieval and tracking of materials.
  5. Assist with outreach and programming: The Library Assistant may be involved in planning and implementing outreach and programming initiatives to promote the Center for Southwest Research's collections and services to the university and wider community.
  6. Collaborate with colleagues: The Library Assistant will work closely with other staff members of the Center for Southwest Research, as well as with colleagues from other departments and external organizations, to support research and preserve historical materials.
  7. Monitor and maintain collection security: The Library Assistant will be responsible for monitoring the security of the collections and enforcing policies and procedures to ensure the safety and integrity of the materials.
  8. Stay updated on best practices and trends: The Library Assistant will be expected to keep up-to-date with the latest developments in library science, archival practices, and preservation techniques to continually improve the services and operations of the Center for Southwest Research.
  9. Perform administrative tasks: The Library Assistant may be required to perform administrative tasks such as scheduling appointments, processing requests, and communicating with researchers and other stakeholders.

Job Qualifications
  • Bachelor's Degree In Library Science Or Related Field.

  • Knowledge Of Library Systems And Databases, Particularly Those Used In Academic Libraries.

  • Experience With Cataloging And Metadata Standards.

  • Familiarity With Preservation And Conservation Techniques For Library Materials.
