- Perform routine maintenance tasks on canal locks, gates, and other equipment.
- Monitor and inspect the condition of the canal system, reporting any issues or concerns to supervisors.
- Operate machinery and equipment such as lock gates, cranes, and dredges.
- Assist in the repair and replacement of damaged or worn equipment and structures.
- Maintain a safe and clean work environment, following all safety protocols and procedures.
- Communicate effectively with team members and supervisors to ensure smooth operation of the canal system.
- Participate in training and development programs to improve skills and knowledge related to the job.
- Comply with all state and federal regulations and guidelines related to canal operation and maintenance.
- Assist in emergency response situations, such as floods or other natural disasters, to protect the canal system and surrounding areas.
- Provide excellent customer service to canal users, answering questions and providing assistance as needed.

High School Diploma Or Equivalent: A Canal Worker 1 At The State Of New York Must Have A High School Diploma Or Equivalent Education.
Physical Strength And Stamina: This Job Requires Physical Strength And Stamina To Perform Tasks Such As Lifting Heavy Objects, Operating Machinery, And Working In Outdoor Environments.
Basic Mechanical And Technical Skills: The Ability To Understand And Operate Basic Mechanical And Technical Equipment Is Essential For A Canal Worker 1.
Ability To Work Independently: A Canal Worker 1 Should Be Able To Work Independently, Follow Instructions, And Make Decisions When Necessary.
