Job Description

The State of Illinois is seeking a dedicated individual to join our team as a Human Services Sign Language Interpreter.   1. Provide sign language interpretation services for individuals with hearing impairments in various human services settings.
  2. Facilitate communication between individuals with hearing impairments and human services professionals.
  3. Ensure accurate and effective interpretation of spoken language into American Sign Language (ASL) and vice versa.
  4. Maintain confidentiality and adhere to ethical standards while interpreting.
  5. Adapt interpretation style and strategies to meet the needs of diverse individuals and situations.
  6. Stay up-to-date on changes in ASL and human services terminology and standards.
  7. Collaborate with human services professionals to ensure effective communication and understanding between all parties.
  8. Advocate for the needs and rights of individuals with hearing impairments within the human services system.
  9. Maintain accurate records and documentation of interpreted sessions.
  10. Attend trainings, workshops, and conferences to enhance interpretation skills and knowledge of the human services field.
  11. Comply with all state and federal laws, regulations, and policies related to sign language interpretation services.
  12. Provide support and guidance to colleagues and other team members regarding sign language interpretation best practices.
  13. Contribute to the development and implementation of policies and procedures related to sign language interpretation services.
  14. Participate in team meetings and professional development opportunities.
  15. Maintain a professional and respectful demeanor at all times while representing the State of Illinois.

Job Qualifications
  • Fluency In American Sign Language (Asl) And Knowledge Of Other Sign Languages Used In The Deaf Community.

  • Bachelor's Degree In Sign Language Interpretation Or A Related Field.

  • Certification From A Recognized Interpreting Organization, Such As The Registry Of Interpreters For The Deaf (Rid).

  • Knowledge Of Laws And Regulations Related To Deaf And Hard Of Hearing Individuals, Including The Americans With Disabilities Act (Ada).

  • Experience Working In A Human Services Setting, Preferably With Deaf And Hard Of Hearing Individuals, And Knowledge Of Resources And Agencies Available To This Population.
