Job Description

Welcome to the State of Illinois DOC Southwestern Illinois CC! We are currently seeking motivated individuals to join our team as Correctional Officer Trainees. As a Correctional Officer Trainee, you will play a critical role in maintaining the safety and security of our facility while also helping to rehabilitate and prepare offenders for successful reentry into society.   1. Maintain facility safety and security: As a Correctional Officer Trainee, you will be responsible for ensuring the safety and security of the facility, its staff, and the offenders within. This includes closely monitoring all activities within the facility, responding to emergencies, and enforcing all safety protocols.
  2. Facilitate offender rehabilitation: You will play a critical role in the rehabilitation process of offenders by assisting in educational programs, counseling sessions, and other activities designed to prepare them for successful reentry into society.
  3. Uphold facility rules and regulations: As a representative of the State of Illinois DOC, it is your responsibility to enforce all facility rules and regulations in a fair and consistent manner. This may involve conducting searches, confiscating contraband, and investigating any rule violations.
  4. Communicate effectively: Strong communication skills are essential in this role. You will be required to communicate with offenders, staff, and other agencies on a regular basis. This includes providing clear and concise instructions, documenting incidents, and relaying important information to the appropriate parties.
  5. Handle challenging situations: Working in a correctional facility can be unpredictable and challenging. As a Correctional Officer Trainee, you must be able to remain calm and professional in difficult situations, such as confrontations with offenders or emergency situations.
  6. Exhibit professionalism and compassion: The role of a Correctional Officer Trainee requires a balance of firmness and compassion. You must be able to maintain a level of professionalism while also showing empathy and understanding towards offenders.
  7. Attend and complete training: As a trainee, you will be required to attend and successfully complete all training programs provided by the State of Illinois DOC. This includes both classroom and on-the-job training.
  8. Adhere to policies and procedures: It is your responsibility to adhere to all policies and procedures set forth by the State of Illinois DOC and the facility. This includes following all safety protocols, maintaining confidentiality, and respecting the rights of offenders.

Job Qualifications
  • High School Diploma Or Equivalent: A Minimum Education Requirement For This Position Is A High School Diploma Or Equivalent, Which Demonstrates The Ability To Successfully Complete Training And Perform The Duties Of A Correctional Officer Trainee.

  • Minimum Age Of 21 Years Old: To Be Eligible For This Position, Applicants Must Be At Least 21 Years Old. This Requirement Is In Place To Ensure That Candidates Have The Maturity And Life Experience Necessary To Handle The Responsibilities Of A Correctional Officer.

  • Physical Fitness And Agility: Correctional Officers Must Be Physically Fit And Able To Pass A Physical Fitness Test In Order To Perform The Physically Demanding Tasks Of The Job. This Includes Being Able To Run, Climb, Lift, And Restrain Individuals If Necessary.

  • No Criminal Record: Applicants Must Have A Clean Criminal Record And Be Able To Pass A Thorough Background Check, Including A Fingerprint Check. This Is To Ensure The Safety And Security Of The Facility And Its Inmates.

  • Excellent Communication And Interpersonal Skills: Correctional Officers Must Possess Strong Communication Skills In Order To Effectively Interact With Inmates, Colleagues, And Supervisors. The Ability To Remain Calm And Professional In Potentially Tense And Volatile Situations Is Crucial For Success In This Role.
