Welcome to the Lynn R. Lowrey Arboretum, a vibrant and dynamic living laboratory at Rice University. We are seeking a visionary leader to serve as the Director of this esteemed institution. As the Director, you will have the opportunity to shape the future of the Arboretum and its role in the university community. We are looking for an individual who is passionate about plants and their conservation, and who possesses strong leadership and management skills. To be considered for this position, candidates must have a minimum of 5 years of experience in a leadership role in a botanical garden, arboretum, or other relevant institution. A master's degree in horticulture, botany, or a related field is required. The ideal candidate will also have a strong understanding of plant collections, horticulture, and landscape management, as well as experience in fundraising and grant writing. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills are a must, as the Director will be responsible for engaging with various stakeholders, including students, faculty, and community members. Above all, we are looking for someone who is dedicated to promoting the mission and values of the Lynn R. Lowrey Arboretum and will inspire others to do the same.

  1. Develop and implement a strategic vision for the Lynn R. Lowrey Arboretum that aligns with the university's goals and values.
  2. Oversee all operations and activities of the Arboretum, including plant collections, horticulture, landscape management, events, and educational programs.
  3. Ensure the Arboretum's financial sustainability through effective budget management and fundraising efforts.
  4. Lead and manage a team of staff, volunteers, and interns, fostering a positive and collaborative work environment.
  5. Build and maintain relationships with key stakeholders, including university administration, faculty, students, donors, and community members.
  6. Develop and maintain partnerships with other botanical gardens, arboreta, and conservation organizations.
  7. Stay up-to-date on industry trends, best practices, and advancements in plant conservation and management.
  8. Ensure the Arboretum's compliance with all relevant regulations and policies.
  9. Serve as a spokesperson for the Arboretum, promoting its mission and values to the public through media appearances, presentations, and other outreach efforts.
  10. Prepare reports and presentations for the university administration and other stakeholders.
  11. Develop and manage grant proposals to secure funding for the Arboretum's projects and initiatives.
  12. Maintain accurate records and documentation of the Arboretum's collections, activities, and finances.
  13. Collaborate with university faculty and students to incorporate the Arboretum into academic research and coursework.
  14. Foster a culture of diversity, equity, and inclusion within the Arboretum and its programs.
  15. Continuously evaluate and improve the Arboretum's operations and programs to ensure their effectiveness and relevance.
