  1. Provide genetic counseling services to expectant parents to help them understand the risks, benefits, and limitations of genetic testing during pregnancy.
  2. Conduct thorough assessments of family medical history and personal risk factors to determine the need for genetic testing.
  3. Explain complex genetic concepts and medical terminology in a clear and understandable manner to patients.
  4. Help patients and their families make informed decisions about genetic testing and any necessary follow-up care.
  5. Collaborate with other healthcare professionals, including physicians, nurses, and social workers, to ensure coordinated care for patients.
  6. Maintain accurate and detailed records of patient consultations and genetic testing results.
  7. Stay up-to-date on advancements in genetics and genetic testing to provide the most current and accurate information to patients.
  8. Provide emotional support and resources to patients and their families throughout the genetic testing process.
  9. Work with insurance companies to obtain coverage for genetic testing and counseling services.
  10. Participate in outreach and education programs to raise awareness about prenatal genetic counseling and testing.
  11. Adhere to all ethical and legal standards in genetic counseling practice.
  12. Continuously evaluate and improve upon counseling techniques and procedures.
  13. Attend conferences and continuing education courses to enhance knowledge and skills in prenatal genetics.
  14. Maintain confidentiality and sensitivity when dealing with personal and sensitive information.
  15. Demonstrate empathy, compassion, and professionalism in all interactions with patients and their families.

Job Qualifications
  • Master's Degree In Genetic Counseling: Candidates Should Possess A Master's Degree In Genetic Counseling From An Accredited Program. This Degree Provides The Necessary Knowledge And Skills To Effectively Provide Prenatal Genetic Counseling.

  • Board Certification: A Candidate For The Prenatal Genetic Counselor Job At Musc Health Should Be Board Certified By The American Board Of Genetic Counseling Or The American Board Of Medical Genetics And Genomics. This Certification Ensures That The Individual Has Met The Rigorous Standards And Competencies Required For The Role.

  • Experience In Prenatal Genetics: Musc Health Requires Candidates To Have A Minimum Of 2 Years Of Experience In Prenatal Genetics Counseling. This Experience Should Include Working With A Wide Range Of Prenatal Genetic Conditions, Conducting Risk Assessments, And Providing Counseling To Families.

  • Knowledge Of Current Prenatal Genetic Testing Methods: The Ideal Candidate Should Have A Strong Understanding Of The Latest Prenatal Genetic Testing Methods, Including Non-Invasive Prenatal Testing (Nipt), Chorionic Villus Sampling (Cvs), And Amniocentesis. They Should Also Be Able To Explain These Tests To Patients And Interpret The Results Accurately.

  • Excellent Communication And Counseling Skills: Prenatal Genetic Counselors At Musc Health Are Expected To Have Excellent Communication And Counseling Skills To Effectively Support And Guide Expecting Parents Through The Process. This Includes The Ability To Explain Complex Genetic Concepts In An Understandable Manner And To Provide Emotional Support To Families Dealing With Genetic Conditions.
