- Conduct genetic counseling sessions with patients and their families to assess their risk for inherited conditions and provide information and support for decision making.
- Stay up-to-date on the latest research and advancements in genetics and neurosciences to provide the most accurate and comprehensive counseling.
- Collaborate with other members of the healthcare team, including physicians, nurses, and genetic counselors, to develop personalized care plans for patients.
- Perform genetic testing and interpret results to assist in diagnosis, treatment, and risk assessment.
- Educate patients and their families on genetic conditions, inheritance patterns, and available treatment options.
- Provide emotional support and counseling to patients and their families as they navigate the complex and often overwhelming information related to genetics and neurosciences.
- Document all patient interactions and maintain accurate and confidential medical records.
- Participate in research and quality improvement initiatives to advance the field of genetics and neurosciences.
- Attend conferences and continuing education opportunities to stay current in the field and maintain licensure and certification.
- Serve as a resource and advocate for patients and families, connecting them with support groups and community resources as needed.
- Uphold ethical standards and maintain patient confidentiality at all times.
- Collaborate with insurance companies and assist in obtaining pre-authorization for genetic testing and counseling services.
- Participate in outreach and education efforts to raise awareness about the role of genetics in neurosciences and promote the services offered by MUSC Health.
- Foster a culture of continuous learning and professional growth within the department and organization.
Master's Degree In Genetic Counseling: A Qualified Candidate For A Genetic Counselor Position At Musc Health Should Possess A Master's Degree In Genetic Counseling From An Accredited Program.
Board-Certification In Genetic Counseling: Candidates Should Have A Valid Certification From The American Board Of Genetic Counseling (Abgc) Or The American Board Of Medical Genetics And Genomics (Abmgg).
Specialization In Neurosciences: Candidates Should Have A Specialization Or Relevant Coursework In Neurosciences, As The Position Requires Expertise In Genetic Disorders Related To The Nervous System.
Clinical Experience: Previous Experience Working As A Genetic Counselor In A Clinical Setting, Preferably In A Neurology Or Neurosurgery Department, Is Preferred.
Knowledge Of Current Genetic Testing And Counseling Practices: Candidates Should Have A Thorough Understanding Of Current Genetic Testing And Counseling Practices, Especially In The Context Of Neurosciences. This Includes Knowledge Of The Latest Research And Advancements In The Field.
