- Develop and implement drug policies and procedures in accordance with state and federal regulations.
- Ensure compliance with medication safety standards and promote safe practices among pharmacy staff.
- Oversee the training and development of pharmacy staff to ensure they are knowledgeable and competent in medication practices.
- Collaborate with other departments to identify areas for improvement and implement strategies to enhance medication management processes.
- Monitor and analyze medication error reports and implement corrective actions as needed.
- Stay current with advancements in pharmacy informatics and utilize technology to improve medication processes.
- Lead and participate in multidisciplinary teams to develop and implement initiatives to optimize medication use and patient outcomes.
- Manage and maintain inventory of medications, ensuring proper storage, handling, and disposal.
- Ensure the timely and accurate dispensing of medications to support patient care.
- Promote a culture of continual learning and improvement within the pharmacy department.
- Develop and maintain relationships with pharmaceutical companies to stay updated on new medications and their appropriate use.
- Manage the budget for the pharmacy department and make recommendations for cost-saving measures.
- Provide guidance and support to pharmacy staff on complex medication orders and drug interactions.
- Foster a collaborative and innovative work environment for pharmacy staff.

Knowledge Of Drug Policy: A Pharmacy Manager At Massachusetts General Hospital Should Possess A Thorough Understanding Of Federal, State, And Local Laws And Regulations Pertaining To Pharmacy Practice And Drug Policy. This Includes Knowledge Of Controlled Substance Laws, Medication Storage And Handling Requirements, And Pharmacy Waste Disposal Regulations.
Training And Supervisory Experience: The Ideal Candidate Should Have A Minimum Of 5 Years Of Experience As A Pharmacy Manager Or A Similar Leadership Role In A Healthcare Setting. They Should Have A Strong Track Record Of Training And Supervising Pharmacy Staff, As Well As Experience In Developing And Implementing Policies And Procedures Related To Medication Management.
Informatics Expertise: The Pharmacy Manager Must Have A Strong Understanding Of Pharmacy Informatics And Be Able To Effectively Utilize Technology To Improve Workflow, Optimize Medication Safety, And Ensure Compliance With Regulatory Requirements. This Includes Experience With Electronic Health Records (Ehrs), Pharmacy Dispensing Systems, And Other Software Applications Commonly Used In Hospital Pharmacies.
Communication And Collaboration Skills: As A Key Member Of The Pharmacy Leadership Team, The Pharmacy Manager Must Have Excellent Communication And Collaboration Skills. They Should Be Able To Effectively Communicate With Physicians, Nurses, And Other Healthcare Professionals To Ensure Safe And Efficient Medication Use. They Should Also Be Able To Collaborate With Other Departments To Implement Hospital-Wide Drug Policy Initiatives.
Advanced Degree In Pharmacy Or Healthcare Administration: A Pharmd, Mba, Or Other Advanced Degree In Pharmacy Or Healthcare Administration Is Highly Preferred For This Role. This Level Of Education Demonstrates A Strong Understanding Of Medication Management, Healthcare Operations, And Business Principles, Which Are All Essential For Success As A Pharmacy Manager At Massachusetts General Hospital.
