  1. Provide interpreting services in both American Sign Language (ASL) and English for deaf and hard of hearing students, faculty, and staff at Johns Hopkins University.
  2. Facilitate effective communication between deaf and hard of hearing individuals and others in the university community through accurate and clear interpretation.
  3. Understand and adhere to ethical standards and guidelines for interpreting, maintaining confidentiality and neutrality at all times.
  4. Collaborate with students, faculty, and staff to develop an individualized plan for interpreting services, taking into account the unique needs and preferences of each individual.
  5. Demonstrate a strong knowledge of ASL and English language and the ability to accurately interpret a wide range of subject matter, including technical and specialized terminology.
  6. Act as an advocate for accessibility and inclusion at the university, promoting a welcoming and inclusive environment for all individuals.
  7. Stay updated on the latest developments and best practices in ASL and interpreting techniques, attending professional development opportunities as needed.
  8. Maintain accurate records of interpreting assignments and submit reports as required.
  9. Communicate effectively with the university community, providing information about interpreting services and addressing any concerns or issues that may arise.
  10. Collaborate with other members of the disability services team to ensure a coordinated and comprehensive approach to supporting students with disabilities.
  11. Adhere to all university policies, procedures, and protocols, ensuring a safe and professional work environment.

Job Qualifications
  • National Certification: A Qualified Candidate For A Part-Time Asl/English Interpreter Job At Johns Hopkins University Should Possess National Certification From A Recognized Organization Such As The Registry Of Interpreters For The Deaf (Rid).

  • Fluency In Asl And English: The Ideal Candidate Should Be Fluent In Both American Sign Language (Asl) And English, With The Ability To Accurately Interpret Complex Concepts And Terminology.

  • Experience In A Higher Education Setting: Prior Experience Working As An Interpreter In A Higher Education Setting, Particularly In A University Or Academic Environment, Is Highly Desirable.
