  1. Provide high-quality interpretation services between American Sign Language and English for Deaf and hearing individuals in various settings such as classrooms, events, and meetings.

  3. Remain up-to-date on the latest techniques and standards in ASL interpreting to ensure the highest level of service.
  4. Collaborate with faculty, staff, and students to understand their communication needs and provide appropriate interpretation services.
  5. Maintain confidentiality and professionalism while interpreting sensitive information.
  6. Manage time effectively and prioritize assignments to meet deadlines.
  7. Adapt to different communication styles and cultural backgrounds to provide accurate interpretation.
  8. Continuously work towards promoting inclusivity and accessibility for the Deaf community.
  9. Attend trainings and workshops to enhance interpreting skills and stay updated on any changes in the field.
  10. Stay informed about university policies and procedures related to accessibility and accommodations.
  11. Collaborate with other interpreters and staff to ensure smooth and efficient service delivery.
  12. Maintain accurate records and documentation of interpretation assignments.
  13. Respond promptly and professionally to any concerns or feedback from students, faculty, or staff regarding interpretation services.
  14. Represent the university in a positive and respectful manner while providing interpretation services.
  15. Maintain a professional and respectful relationship with Deaf and hearing individuals.

Job Qualifications

  • Fluent In American Sign Language (Asl): The Ideal Candidate For This Position Should Possess A High Level Of Fluency In Asl, Including A Deep Understanding Of Deaf Culture And The Ability To Accurately Interpret Between Asl And English.

  • Certified Interpreter: Applicants Should Hold A Valid Certification From An Accredited Interpreting Program, Such As The National Registry Of Interpreters For The Deaf (Rid) Or The National Association Of The Deaf (Nad).

  • Knowledge Of Medical Terminology: As An Interpreter At Johns Hopkins University, The Ability To Accurately Interpret Medical Terminology Is Crucial. Candidates Should Have A Strong Understanding Of Medical Terminology And Be Able To Interpret Complex Medical Discussions.

  • Interpersonal And Communication Skills: Strong Interpersonal And Communication Skills Are Essential For This Role. The Interpreter Should Be Able To Effectively Communicate With Both Deaf And Hearing Individuals, And Possess The Ability To Establish Rapport And Maintain Confidentiality In A Professional Setting.
