
Animal Care Technician

- Provide daily care for animals in the shelter, including feeding, cleaning, and administering medications as needed.
- Monitor the health and behavior of animals, and report any concerns or issues to the appropriate staff.
- Assist with intake and adoption processes, including completing necessary paperwork and conducting meet and greets with potential adopters.
- Ensure that all animals are kept in a safe and clean environment at all times.
- Communicate effectively with staff, volunteers, and the public regarding animal care and shelter operations.
- Help maintain accurate records of animal intake, medical treatments, and adoptions.
- Assist with organizing and participating in events and fundraisers to promote animal adoption and raise awareness for animal welfare.
- Collaborate with the veterinary team to ensure timely and appropriate medical care for animals in the shelter.
- Help train and supervise volunteers in animal care tasks and shelter procedures.
- Adhere to all city and state laws and regulations regarding animal welfare and shelter operations.
- Continuously strive to improve the quality of care and services provided to the animals in the shelter.
- Maintain a positive and professional attitude, even in challenging situations.
- Attend meetings and training sessions as required to stay updated on shelter policies and procedures.
- Uphold the mission and values of the City of Detroit's Animal Care department in all interactions and tasks.
- Handle confidential information with discretion and maintain the security of the shelter at all times.
High School Diploma Or Equivalent: A Minimum Education Requirement For An Animal Care Technician At The City Of Detroit Is A High School Diploma Or Equivalent. This Ensures A Basic Level Of Education And Knowledge Necessary For The Job.
Experience Working With Animals: Candidates For This Position Should Have Experience Working With A Variety Of Animals, Such As Dogs, Cats, And Small Animals. Previous Work Experience In A Similar Role, Such As A Veterinary Assistant Or Animal Shelter Volunteer, Is Preferred.
Knowledge Of Animal Care And Behavior: A Thorough Understanding Of Animal Care And Behavior Is Essential For An Animal Care Technician. This Includes Knowledge Of Proper Handling Techniques, Nutrition, And Common Health Issues In Animals.
Physical Fitness And Stamina: This Job Requires Physical Fitness And Stamina As It Involves Lifting And Carrying Heavy Animals, Walking And Standing For Long Periods Of Time, And Performing Physically Demanding Tasks Such As Cleaning Animal Enclosures.
Strong Communication Skills: An Animal Care Technician Must Be Able To Effectively Communicate With Other Staff Members, Volunteers, And The Public. This Includes Providing Updates On Animal Care, Responding To Inquiries, And Providing Guidance To Volunteers And Visitors.
