Job Description

As a Registered Nurse (RN) in our Hematology/Oncology department, you will play a vital role in the treatment and support of our young patients as they navigate their cancer or blood disorder journey.   1. Provide exceptional nursing care to pediatric patients with hematology and oncology needs.
  2. Develop and implement individualized care plans for patients based on their specific needs and medical conditions.
  3. Monitor and assess patients' physical and emotional well-being, and make necessary adjustments to their care plans.
  4. Administer medications and treatments as prescribed by physicians, ensuring accurate dosages and proper techniques.
  5. Collaborate with multidisciplinary team members, including physicians, social workers, and child life specialists, to ensure comprehensive and coordinated care.
  6. Educate patients and their families about their condition, treatment options, and self-care strategies.
  7. Advocate for patients and their families, ensuring their needs and concerns are addressed and their rights are respected.
  8. Maintain accurate and up-to-date patient records, including nursing assessments, progress notes, and medication administration records.
  9. Adhere to all hospital policies and procedures, as well as regulatory and accreditation standards.
  10. Participate in ongoing education and training to stay current on best practices and advancements in pediatric hematology and oncology care.
  11. Serve as a role model and mentor to new and less experienced staff members.
  12. Demonstrate empathy, compassion, and sensitivity when interacting with patients and their families.
  13. Maintain a safe and clean environment for patients and staff, following infection control protocols and standard precautions.
  14. Continuously evaluate and improve the quality of care provided, identifying areas for improvement and implementing solutions.
  15. Act as a liaison between patients, families, and healthcare providers to ensure effective communication and coordination of care.

Job Qualifications
  • Bachelor's Degree In Nursing (Bsn) Or Higher: A Bsn Or Higher Education In Nursing Is Typically Required For A Rn Position In The Hematology/Oncology Department At Choc Children's Hospital. This Ensures That The Candidate Has A Strong Foundation In Nursing Theory And Clinical Skills.

  • Current Rn License: All Candidates Must Have A Current And Valid Rn License In The State Of California. This License Must Be Maintained Throughout Employment At Choc Children's Hospital.

  • Minimum Of 2 Years Of Experience In Hematology/Oncology: Choc Children's Hospital Requires Candidates To Have At Least 2 Years Of Experience Working In A Hematology/Oncology Setting. This Experience Ensures That The Candidate Is Familiar With The Unique Challenges And Patient Population In This Department.

  • Certification In Oncology Nursing: Holding A Certification In Oncology Nursing, Such As The Certified Pediatric Oncology Nurse (Cpon) Credential, Is Highly Preferred For This Position. This Certification Demonstrates A Higher Level Of Knowledge And Expertise In Caring For Pediatric Patients With Cancer And Blood Disorders.

  • Excellent Communication And Teamwork Skills: Working In Hematology/Oncology Requires Strong Communication And Teamwork Skills. Candidates Must Be Able To Effectively Communicate With Patients And Their Families, As Well As Collaborate With A Multidisciplinary Team Of Healthcare Professionals To Provide The Best Possible Care.
