Job Description

Are you a meticulous and detail-oriented individual with a passion for preserving and organizing rare materials? Do you have experience in cataloguing and classifying unique items? Brown University Library is seeking a Rare Materials Cataloguer to join our team and help us preserve and make accessible our vast collection of rare and special materials. In this role, you will play a crucial part in maintaining and enhancing the library's rare materials collection, ensuring its proper organization and accessibility for researchers and scholars.   1. Catalogue and classify rare materials: Responsible for accurately and efficiently cataloguing and classifying rare materials in accordance with library standards and procedures.
  2. Preserve and maintain collection: Ensure the preservation and maintenance of the rare materials collection by implementing appropriate handling and storage techniques.
  3. Organize materials: Develop and maintain a system for organizing and arranging rare materials in a way that is functional and accessible for researchers and scholars.
  4. Enhance accessibility: Continuously work towards enhancing the accessibility of the rare materials collection by implementing new technologies and methods.
  5. Research and record: Conduct thorough research on rare materials and accurately record and document findings in the library's database.
  6. Collaborate with team: Work closely with other librarians and staff members to coordinate efforts and contribute to the overall preservation and organization of the library's rare materials.
  7. Stay updated on best practices: Keep up-to-date with current trends and best practices in cataloguing and preserving rare materials to ensure the collection remains relevant and accessible.
  8. Assist with exhibitions and events: Collaborate with the exhibition and events team to select and prepare rare materials for display and public viewing.
  9. Train and supervise interns: Provide guidance and training to interns who may assist with cataloguing and preserving rare materials.
  10. Adhere to policies and procedures: Follow all library policies and procedures related to the handling, preservation, and cataloguing of rare materials.
  11. Maintain accurate records: Keep thorough and accurate records of all rare materials and their locations within the library.
  12. Handle rare materials with care: Handle rare materials with the utmost care and attention to detail to ensure their preservation for future generations.
  13. Communicate with researchers and scholars: Respond to requests and inquiries from researchers and scholars regarding rare materials and assist them in accessing the collection.
  14. Participate in professional development: Attend conferences, workshops, and training sessions to continue developing skills and knowledge related to rare materials

Job Qualifications
  • Master's Degree In Library Science Or Related Field: A Graduate Degree In Library Science Or A Related Field Is Typically Required For A Rare Materials Cataloguer Position At Brown University. This Ensures That The Candidate Has A Strong Foundation In Library Principles And Practices, As Well As Specialized Knowledge In Cataloging Rare Materials.

  • Demonstrated Experience With Rare Materials Cataloging: Candidates Should Have Previous Experience Cataloging Rare Materials, Preferably In A Research Library Setting. This Experience Should Include Knowledge Of Specialized Cataloging Standards Such As Descriptive Cataloging Of Rare Materials (Dcrm) And Familiarity With Rare Book And Manuscript Terminology.

  • Strong Knowledge Of Marc And Metadata Standards: A Rare Materials Cataloguer Should Have A Thorough Understanding Of Marc (Machine-Readable Cataloging) And Other Metadata Standards Such As Dublin Core, Mods, And Ead. This Will Ensure That The Cataloger Is Able To Accurately Describe And Provide Access Points For Rare Materials In The Library's Catalog.

  • Attention To Detail And Strong Organizational Skills: Rare Materials Often Require Meticulous Cataloging And Handling To Ensure Their Preservation. A Successful Candidate For This Position Should Have Excellent Attention To Detail And Strong Organizational Skills To Accurately And Efficiently Catalog These Materials.

  • Familiarity With Digital Preservation And Digitization: In Addition To Cataloging Physical Rare Materials, Brown University's Rare Materials Cataloguer May Also Be Responsible For Digitizing And Preserving These Materials In A Digital Format. Therefore, Candidates Should Have Knowledge Of Digital Preservation Best Practices And Experience With Digitization Techniques And Equipment.
