  1. Provide genetic counseling services to patients and their families, including risk assessment, education, and support.
  2. Conduct thorough evaluations of patients' medical history, family history, and genetic test results to determine risk factors and potential inherited conditions.
  3. Communicate complex genetic information in an understandable and compassionate manner to patients and their families.
  4. Collaborate with healthcare teams to develop personalized care plans for patients based on their genetic risk factors.
  5. Stay up-to-date on the latest advancements and research in genetics in order to provide the most accurate and current information to patients.
  6. Maintain patient confidentiality and adhere to all ethical and legal guidelines.
  7. Educate and provide resources to healthcare professionals and the community about genetic counseling and testing.
  8. Participate in multidisciplinary case conferences and team meetings to discuss patient care and treatment plans.
  9. Document all patient interactions, assessments, and recommendations accurately and in a timely manner.
  10. Continuously evaluate and improve the genetic counseling program at Ascension Health to ensure the highest quality of care for patients.
  11. Collaborate with insurance companies and other third-party payers to obtain coverage for genetic testing and counseling services.
  12. Serve as a patient advocate and provide emotional support to patients and their families throughout their genetic counseling journey.
  13. Adhere to all organizational policies, procedures, and regulations.
  14. Participate in professional development activities to maintain genetic counseling certification and enhance skills and knowledge.
  15. Foster a welcoming and inclusive environment for patients and colleagues of all backgrounds.

Job Qualifications
  • Master's Degree In Genetic Counseling: This Is The Minimum Educational Requirement For A Genetic Counselor Job At Ascension Health. A Master's Degree In Genetic Counseling Provides The Necessary Knowledge And Skills To Assess And Counsel Patients Regarding Genetic Conditions.

  • Certification From The American Board Of Genetic Counseling (Abgc): Ascension Health Requires All Genetic Counselors To Be Certified By The Abgc. This Certification Ensures That The Candidate Has Met The Necessary Competency And Ethical Standards For The Field.

  • Experience In Genetic Counseling: Ascension Health Prefers Candidates With At Least 2-3 Years Of Experience In Genetic Counseling. This Experience Can Be Gained Through Internships, Externships, Or Previous Employment At A Genetic Counseling Practice.

  • Knowledge Of Genetic Testing And Technologies: Genetic Counselors At Ascension Health Are Expected To Have A Thorough Understanding Of Genetic Testing And Technologies. This Includes Knowledge Of Different Types Of Genetic Tests, Their Limitations, And How To Interpret Results For Patients.

  • Excellent Communication And Interpersonal Skills: Genetic Counselors At Ascension Health Work Closely With Patients, Families, And Healthcare Providers. Therefore, Strong Communication And Interpersonal Skills Are Essential For This Role. This Includes The Ability To Convey Complex Genetic Information In An Understandable Manner And Provide Emotional Support To Patients And Their Families.
