  1. Oversee the daily operations of the Biological Mass Spectrometry Facility, ensuring efficient and effective functioning of the facility.
  2. Collaborate with researchers to develop and implement cutting-edge mass spectrometry techniques and projects.
  3. Manage and maintain all equipment and instruments in the facility, ensuring they are operating at optimal levels.
  4. Train and supervise staff members, providing guidance and support to ensure quality work and adherence to safety protocols.
  5. Develop and maintain standard operating procedures (SOPs) for all processes and techniques used in the facility.
  6. Troubleshoot technical issues and provide solutions to ensure minimal disruption to research projects.
  7. Monitor and maintain inventory of supplies and reagents, ensuring proper storage and timely ordering.
  8. Ensure compliance with all relevant regulations and safety protocols in the facility.
  9. Collaborate with other departments and facilities within the university to facilitate interdisciplinary research projects.
  10. Maintain accurate records and documentation of all activities, including sample analyses, instrument maintenance, and staff training.
  11. Stay updated on advancements and developments in mass spectrometry techniques and equipment, and implement them in the facility as appropriate.
  12. Participate in the recruitment and hiring process for new staff members.
  13. Manage the budget for the facility, ensuring efficient use of resources.
  14. Develop and maintain relationships with vendors and suppliers for purchasing equipment and supplies.
  15. Communicate regularly with researchers to understand their needs and provide support for their projects.

Job Qualifications
  • Advanced Degree In Biological Sciences: A Lab Manager For A Biological Mass Spectrometry Facility At The University Of Texas, Austin Should Have At Least A Master's Degree In A Field Related To Biological Sciences Such As Biochemistry, Molecular Biology, Or Biotechnology. This Will Ensure A Strong Understanding Of The Principles And Techniques Used In Mass Spectrometry.

  • Extensive Experience With Mass Spectrometry Techniques: The Lab Manager Should Have A Minimum Of 5 Years Of Experience Working With Mass Spectrometry Instruments, Including Sample Preparation, Data Analysis, And Troubleshooting. This Experience Should Also Include Familiarity With Different Types Of Mass Spectrometry Such As Maldi-Tof, Lc-Ms, And Gc-Ms.

  • Knowledge Of Biological Research: The Lab Manager Should Have A Solid Understanding Of Biological Research Principles And Techniques, Including Protein Identification, Quantification, And Characterization. They Should Also Have Knowledge Of Sample Preparation Techniques For Different Biological Samples, Such As Tissues, Cells, And Fluids.

  • Strong Leadership And Management Skills: As A Lab Manager, This Individual Will Be Responsible For Overseeing The Day-To-Day Operations Of The Mass Spectrometry Facility, Including Supervising Staff, Managing Budgets, And Maintaining Equipment. Therefore, Strong Leadership And Management Skills Are Essential For This Role.

  • Excellent Communication And Collaboration Skills: The Lab Manager Will Work Closely With Researchers, Students, And Other Staff Members In The Center For Biomedical Research Support. Therefore, Excellent Communication And Collaboration Skills Are Necessary To Effectively Train And Assist Users, Troubleshoot Issues, And Maintain A Positive Working Relationship With All Stakeholders.
