The University of California, San Diego's Scripps Institution of Oceanography (SIO) is seeking highly motivated and experienced individuals to join our team as Per Diem Deck Crew on our research vessels. As a member of our deck crew, you will have the opportunity to support groundbreaking research in the beautiful waters of the Pacific Ocean. We are looking for individuals who are detail-oriented, safety-conscious, and have a strong work ethic.   1. Assist in the safe and efficient operation of the research vessel during scientific expeditions.
  2. Maintain a safe working environment for all crew members and research personnel on board.
  3. Operate and maintain all deck equipment, including winches, cranes, and other specialized equipment.
  4. Perform routine maintenance and repair tasks on deck equipment, as needed.
  5. Assist with deploying and retrieving scientific equipment, such as nets, buoys, and sensors.
  6. Ensure proper storage and handling of all scientific samples and data collected during expeditions.
  7. Monitor and report any safety hazards or maintenance issues to the vessel's Captain and Chief Mate.
  8. Collaborate with other crew members and research personnel to achieve research goals and objectives.
  9. Adhere to all safety protocols and procedures, including emergency response plans and safety drills.
  10. Maintain accurate records of all equipment and supplies used during expeditions.
  11. Participate in crew meetings and training sessions as required.
  12. Uphold the values and mission of SIO and the University of California, San Diego.
  13. Continuously strive to improve and enhance work processes and procedures on board the vessel.
  14. Provide excellent customer service to all research personnel and guests on board.
  15. Represent SIO and the University of California, San Diego in a professional and positive manner at all times.

Job Qualifications
  • Minimum Of 2 Years Of Experience Working On A Research Vessel.

  • Valid Twic (Transportation Worker Identification Credential) Card.

  • Proficiency In Operating And Maintaining Deck Equipment And Machinery.

  • Ability To Work Long Hours And In Challenging Weather Conditions.

  • Strong Communication And Teamwork Skills To Effectively Work With Other Crew Members And Research Scientists.
