- Develop and implement comprehensive biological safety policies and procedures to ensure compliance with federal, state, and university regulations.
- Conduct regular inspections of research facilities to identify potential safety hazards and recommend corrective actions.
- Collaborate with researchers and laboratory personnel to provide guidance on proper handling, storage, and disposal of biological materials.
- Stay current with latest developments in biosafety protocols, regulations, and best practices and communicate changes to relevant stakeholders.
- Coordinate and participate in safety training programs for faculty, staff, and students.
- Conduct risk assessments and develop safety plans for new research projects involving hazardous biological materials.
- Investigate and report any safety incidents or violations, and recommend appropriate corrective actions.
- Maintain accurate records of safety inspections, incidents, and training sessions.
- Work closely with other safety specialists and university departments to ensure a safe and healthy work environment.
- Serve as a resource for faculty and staff on matters related to biological safety.
- Collaborate with regulatory agencies during inspections and maintain compliance with all applicable laws and regulations.
- Identify and evaluate potential risks to the university and make recommendations for risk mitigation.
- Participate in emergency response planning and drills.
- Serve as a liaison between the university and external agencies regarding biological safety matters.
- Develop and maintain relationships with vendors and suppliers for safety equipment and supplies.
- Conduct audits of research facilities to ensure compliance with safety protocols.
- Assist in the development of emergency response plans for biological incidents.
- Communicate regularly with university leadership and provide updates on any safety concerns or initiatives.
- Create and maintain a positive and inclusive work environment that promotes a culture of safety.
- Continuously evaluate and improve existing safety programs and procedures to ensure the highest level of safety for all members of the university community.
Bachelor's Degree In A Relevant Scientific Field Such As Biology, Microbiology, Or Biochemistry.
Minimum Of 3 Years Of Experience In Laboratory Safety, Preferably In A Biological Research Setting.
Knowledge Of Federal, State, And Local Regulations Related To Biological Safety, Including Biosafety In Microbiological And Biomedical Laboratories (Bmbl) And Occupational Safety And Health Administration (Osha) Standards.
Certification As A Biological Safety Professional (Cbsp) Or Registered Biosafety Professional (Rbp) Preferred.
Strong Communication And Interpersonal Skills, With The Ability To Effectively Train And Educate Researchers On Proper Safety Protocols And Procedures.
