Job Description

Are you passionate about making a difference in the lives of individuals who are deaf or hard of hearing? If so, then we have an exciting opportunity for you to join our team as a Paraprofessional for the Deaf/Hard of Hearing at the State of Utah. In this role, you will provide essential support to students with hearing impairments, ensuring they have equal access to education and the resources they need to succeed.   1. Provide support and assistance to students who are deaf or hard of hearing in their academic and social endeavors.
  2. Ensure that students have equal access to education by implementing accommodations and modifications as needed.
  3. Utilize American Sign Language (ASL) to communicate effectively with students and promote inclusivity in the classroom.
  4. Collaborate with teachers, parents, and other professionals to develop individualized education plans for students.
  5. Facilitate communication between students and teachers, as well as between students and their peers.
  6. Assist with the use and maintenance of assistive technology and other resources for students with hearing impairments.
  7. Foster a positive and supportive learning environment for students, promoting their self-esteem and independence.
  8. Attend meetings and trainings to stay updated on best practices for supporting students who are deaf or hard of hearing.
  9. Act as an advocate for students, ensuring their needs are met and their voices are heard.
  10. Maintain confidentiality and follow all ethical guidelines in working with students and their families.

Job Qualifications
  • Fluency In American Sign Language (Asl): This Is A Crucial Qualification For A Paraprofessional For The Deaf/Hard Of Hearing Job At The State Of Utah. It Is Essential To Have A Strong Understanding And Proficiency In Asl To Effectively Communicate With Deaf And Hard Of Hearing Individuals.

  • Knowledge Of Deaf Culture: Along With Fluency In Asl, It Is Important For A Paraprofessional To Have A Deep Understanding Of Deaf Culture. This Includes Understanding The Unique Experiences And Challenges Faced By The Deaf And Hard Of Hearing Community, As Well As Being Sensitive To Their Cultural Norms And Values.

  • Excellent Communication Skills: In Addition To Asl, A Paraprofessional For The Deaf/Hard Of Hearing Should Also Possess Strong Verbal And Written Communication Skills. This Will Allow Them To Effectively Communicate With Both Deaf And Hearing Individuals, As Well As Accurately Document And Report Information.

  • Education Or Training In Deaf Education: Many Paraprofessionals For The Deaf/Hard Of Hearing Positions Require A Minimum Of An Associate's Degree In Deaf Education Or Related Field. This Education Provides A Strong Foundation In Understanding The Needs Of Deaf And Hard Of Hearing Individuals And Implementing Appropriate Strategies To Support Their Learning.

  • Experience Working With Deaf And Hard Of Hearing Individuals: Previous Experience Working With Deaf And Hard Of Hearing Individuals, Either In A Professional Or Volunteer Setting, Is Highly Desirable For This Job. This Demonstrates A Strong Understanding Of The Community's Needs And The Ability To Effectively Support And Advocate For Them.
