- Maintain the safety and security of correctional facilities and individuals within them.
- Monitor and supervise inmates, ensuring compliance with facility rules and regulations.
- Conduct routine checks of facilities and inmate living areas.
- Respond to emergency situations and take appropriate action.
- Communicate effectively with inmates, coworkers, and supervisors.
- Enforce rules and discipline when necessary.
- Conduct searches of inmates and their living areas.
- Maintain accurate records and documentation.
- Escort inmates to and from various locations within the facility.
- Provide guidance and support to inmates during their rehabilitation and reintegration process.
- Report any incidents or issues to supervisors.

- Maintain a professional and respectful demeanor at all times.
- Collaborate with other correctional officers and staff to ensure a safe and efficient environment.

High School Diploma Or Equivalent: A Minimum Of A High School Diploma Or Ged Is Typically Required For A Correctional Officer Position At The State Of Utah.
Law Enforcement Or Military Experience: Previous Experience In Law Enforcement Or The Military Can Be Beneficial For A Correctional Officer Position, As It Demonstrates The Ability To Handle High-Stress Situations And Follow Strict Protocols.
Physical Fitness: Correctional Officers Must Be Physically Fit And Able To Pass A Physical Fitness Test, As The Job Can Be Physically Demanding. This Includes Being Able To Restrain Inmates, Walk And Stand For Long Periods Of Time, And Pass A Medical Examination.
Excellent Communication And Interpersonal Skills: The Ability To Communicate Effectively And Maintain Professional Relationships With Inmates, Staff, And Visitors Is Crucial For A Correctional Officer. Strong Conflict Resolution And De-Escalation Skills Are Also Important.
Completion Of A Training Academy: The State Of Utah May Require Correctional Officers To Complete A Training Academy To Learn The Necessary Skills And Knowledge For The Job. This May Include Courses In Self-Defense, Firearms, Emergency Response, And Inmate Management.
