- Provide orientation and mobility training to individuals with visual impairments to improve their independence and mobility.
- Develop individualized training plans based on each person's specific needs and goals.
- Conduct assessments to determine the level of assistance and training required for each individual.
- Collaborate with other professionals, such as therapists and educators, to ensure a holistic approach to the individual's rehabilitation.
- Stay up-to-date on the latest techniques and technologies in the field of orientation and mobility.
- Maintain accurate and thorough documentation of training sessions and progress of individuals.
- Advocate for the rights and needs of individuals with disabilities.
- Provide emotional support and encouragement to individuals as they navigate their disabilities.
- Educate family members and caregivers on how to best support and assist individuals with visual impairments.
- Work closely with community resources and organizations to ensure individuals have access to necessary services and support.
- Attend trainings, conferences, and workshops to continually enhance knowledge and skills.
- Adhere to ethical and professional standards at all times.
- Collaborate with team members to ensure a cohesive and effective approach to providing services.
- Maintain a safe and respectful environment for individuals during training sessions.
- Continuously monitor and evaluate the effectiveness of training and make necessary adjustments.
Bachelor's Degree In Orientation & Mobility, Special Education, Rehabilitation Counseling, Or A Related Field.
Certification As A Certified Orientation & Mobility Specialist (Coms) From The Academy For Certification Of Vision Rehabilitation & Education Professionals (Acvrep).
Minimum Of 2 Years Of Experience Working With Individuals Who Are Blind Or Visually Impaired, Preferably In A School Or Rehabilitation Setting.
Strong Knowledge Of Best Practices And Techniques In Orientation And Mobility Instruction, Including Experience With Different Mobility Aids And Technologies.
Excellent Communication And Interpersonal Skills, With The Ability To Work Collaboratively With Individuals, Families, And Other Professionals In A Team Setting.
