
Correctional Officer

- Monitor and maintain the safety and security of correctional facilities and inmates.
- Conduct regular patrols and inspections of assigned areas to ensure compliance with facility rules and regulations.
- Enforce institutional rules and regulations, as well as state and federal laws.
- Conduct searches of inmates and their living areas to prevent contraband from entering the facility.
- Respond to emergencies, such as fights or medical incidents, and provide appropriate assistance.
- Maintain accurate and thorough records of daily activities and incidents.
- Provide support and guidance to inmates in their rehabilitation and reintegration into society.
- Communicate effectively and professionally with inmates, fellow officers, and other staff members.
- Complete required training and continually develop knowledge and skills related to the field of corrections.
- Demonstrate physical fitness and mental resilience to effectively perform the duties of a correctional officer.
- Maintain a professional and respectful attitude towards inmates, colleagues, and superiors.
- Adhere to department policies and procedures, as well as state and federal laws and regulations.
- Work in a team-oriented environment and collaborate with other officers to ensure a safe and secure facility.
- Attend to the basic needs of inmates, such as meals, hygiene, and recreation time.
- Serve as a positive role model and maintain a high level of professionalism at all times.
- Continuously maintain a safe and secure environment by identifying and addressing potential security threats.
- Respond to and appropriately handle any volatile situations that may arise.
- Conduct inmate counts and maintain accurate records of inmate movement within the facility.
- Provide written and verbal reports on incidents, rule violations, and inmate behavior.
- Uphold the mission and values of the Department of Corrections while performing duties as a correctional officer.
High School Diploma Or Equivalent: A Minimum Educational Requirement For A Correctional Officer Job At State Of Oregon Is A High School Diploma Or Equivalent. This Ensures That Applicants Have A Basic Level Of Education And Are Able To Understand And Follow Procedures.
Prior Law Enforcement Or Correctional Experience: Candidates With Prior Experience In Law Enforcement Or Corrections Are Preferred For A Correctional Officer Position At State Of Oregon. This Experience Demonstrates A Strong Understanding Of The Criminal Justice System And The Ability To Handle Challenging Situations.
Physical Fitness And Agility: Correctional Officers Are Required To Perform Physically Demanding Tasks Such As Restraining Inmates And Responding To Emergencies. Therefore, Candidates For This Job Must Meet Specific Physical Fitness And Agility Standards Set By The State Of Oregon.
Excellent Communication And Interpersonal Skills: Correctional Officers Must Be Able To Communicate Effectively With Inmates, Their Families, And Other Staff Members. They Must Also Be Able To De-Escalate Conflicts And Maintain A Professional Demeanor In Difficult Situations.
Pass A Background Check And Drug Test: The State Of Oregon Conducts Thorough Background Checks And Drug Tests On All Applicants For Correctional Officer Positions. A Clean Criminal Record And The Ability To Pass A Drug Test Are Necessary Qualifications For This Job.
