Job Description

Welcome to the State of Florida's Department of Juvenile Justice! We are currently seeking a dedicated and compassionate individual to join our team as a Juvenile Justice Detention Officer I. As a member of our department, you will play a critical role in ensuring the safety and well-being of youth in our care while promoting positive behavior and rehabilitation.   1. Ensure the safety and security of youth in our care at all times.
  2. Supervise and monitor the behavior and activities of youth in a detention facility.
  3. Maintain a calm and professional demeanor in high-stress situations.
  4. Communicate effectively with youth, coworkers, and supervisors.
  5. Observe and report any concerning behavior or issues to appropriate personnel.
  6. Implement and enforce facility rules and regulations.
  7. Facilitate and participate in educational and recreational activities for youth.
  8. Maintain accurate and thorough documentation of daily activities and incidents.
  9. Serve as a positive role model for youth and promote positive behavior and rehabilitation.
  10. Attend and actively participate in training and professional development opportunities.
  11. Collaborate with other team members to ensure a safe and supportive environment for youth.
  12. Follow all department policies and procedures to ensure compliance with state and federal regulations.
  13. Provide guidance and support to youth in navigating the legal system and accessing resources.
  14. Maintain confidentiality and professionalism at all times.
  15. Respond to emergencies and follow proper protocols to ensure the safety of youth and staff.
  16. Foster a positive and respectful work environment.
  17. Continuously assess and address potential safety hazards within the facility.
  18. Participate in team meetings and contribute ideas for improving department processes and operations.
  19. Adhere to the department's mission and values in all aspects of the job.
  20. Demonstrate a commitment to ongoing learning and growth in the field of juvenile justice.

Job Qualifications
  • Minimum Education Requirement: A High School Diploma Or Equivalent Is Required For This Position.

  • Physical Fitness: Candidates Must Be Able To Pass A Physical Fitness Test And Maintain Physical Fitness Throughout Their Employment.

  • Criminal Justice Background: Prior Experience Or Education In The Field Of Criminal Justice Or Law Enforcement Is Preferred.

  • Communication Skills: Excellent Communication And Interpersonal Skills Are Essential For Working With Juveniles, Their Families, And Other Professionals In A Detention Setting.

  • Training And Certification: Successful Completion Of A State-Approved Juvenile Detention Officer Training Program And Certification Is Required, Or Must Be Obtained Within A Specified Period Of Time After Hire.
