  1. Conduct archaeological research and investigations in accordance with state and federal laws and regulations.
  2. Assess potential impacts to cultural resources and make recommendations for mitigation strategies.
  3. Document and record archaeological findings using appropriate methods and techniques.
  4. Prepare reports and presentations detailing research findings and interpretations.
  5. Collaborate with other team members, agencies, and stakeholders to develop and implement preservation plans.
  6. Provide expert advice and guidance on cultural resource management issues.
  7. Maintain accurate and organized records of all archaeological work performed.
  8. Stay up-to-date on current archaeological theories, methods, and technologies.
  9. Assist with the development and implementation of education and outreach programs to promote responsible stewardship of cultural resources.
  10. Adhere to ethical standards and guidelines for the preservation and management of cultural resources.
  11. Ensure compliance with all safety protocols and procedures during fieldwork and laboratory analysis.
  12. Maintain a professional and respectful attitude towards colleagues, partners, and community members.
  13. Contribute to the overall success of the team by actively participating in meetings, training, and other activities.
  14. Undertake any other duties or responsibilities as assigned by the supervisor.

Job Qualifications
  • Bachelor's Degree In Archaeology Or Related Field: A Minimum Of A Bachelor's Degree In Archaeology Or A Related Field Is Typically Required For A Staff Archaeologist Position At The State Of California. This Degree Provides A Strong Foundation In The Principles And Methods Of Archaeology.

  • At Least 2 Years Of Field Experience: The State Of California Typically Requires At Least 2 Years Of Field Experience In Archaeology For A Staff Archaeologist Position. This Ensures That The Candidate Has Practical Knowledge Of Excavation Techniques, Artifact Analysis, And Site Recording Methods.

  • Knowledge Of California Archaeology: Since The Job Is With The State Of California, A Strong Understanding Of California Archaeology Is Essential. This Includes Knowledge Of The State's Cultural Resources Regulations, As Well As Familiarity With The Diverse Cultures And Histories Of The Region.

  • Excellent Communication And Writing Skills: Staff Archaeologists At The State Of California Are Often Required To Write Technical Reports And Communicate With A Variety Of Stakeholders, Including Government Agencies, Tribal Groups, And The Public. Excellent Written And Verbal Communication Skills Are Therefore Important Qualifications For This Role.
