Hi, my name is Sophia! I am a recent graduate from UC Davis and received my B.S. in wildlife conservation biology. I also have my A.S. in chemistry and A.A. in natural sciences. My passion has always been animals for as long as I can remember, leading me to work with wildlife as well in veterinary settings. I have found in my employment history from working in food service, veterinary clinics, research labs, and the outdoors, that I am adaptable to new environments and enjoy learning new things. In my future, I hope to contribute to conservation efforts and sustainable actions.

During my time at university, I was able to take conservation-related classes that are not offered at many other universities including: herpetology, ichthyology, wildlife ecology, field methods, and animal behavior. Additionally, I was lucky enough to be able to participate in research opportunities with the marine science, ecology, animal science, and conservation biology departments.

University of California, Davis

In the wood duck project, UC Davis student were selected to be sent out into the field to collect data on wood duck nest boxes. Duties included measurements of eggs and hens, and hen handling.

Field Intern

Interns carried out many duties to help support the research staff in their goal to learn more about the life history of delta and longfin smelt. Responsibilities included dissection assistance, data quality checks, data imaging, fecundity assessments and otolith sanding. This role also taught me the importance of communicating with superiors whenever something might not be correct in order to assert the most accurate data.

Undergraduate Intern

On the UC Davis feedlot, interns assisted in animal husbandry of cattle for research in the animal science department. Interns main responsibilities were feeding of cattle and assessing their physical health for any physical or behavioral changes, while also carrying out safety protocols around such large mammals.

Summer Intern

At APCC, I was able to gain my first experience in animal handling and care. While it was certainly a change from working in food service, I found myself adapting smoothly and learning so much in a short time. Kennel attendants were responsible for looking after boarding patients at the hospital and had to pay close attention to behavioral and physical abnormalities to assure the patient's comfort in a new environment. Additionally, kennel attendants fed, medicated, walked, bathed patients and cleaned anywhere from 12-37 kennels every day. Being one of the leads, this job taught me how to lower my coworkers stress levels and manage a team.
