New York State  Public Health Essentials

Hi! My name is Jenna Mattson and I currently work as a Public Health Specialist II for the New York State Public Health Corps. My site placement is at D'Youville University where I assist with research and academic projects related to the universities Center for Doctoral Studies and Research. I also assist with the workflow of a HRSA grant awarded to D'Youville University to train Community Health Workers in the Buffalo community. This also includes providing advanced training, internship, and apprenticeship opportunities to Community Health Workers. My interests and passions in public health include epidemiology, disease surveillance, global public health, and reproductive health. I have experience writing scientific reports, literature reviews, qualitative surveys, and developing visualizations for reports based off data analysis.

University at Buffalo

During my first year as a Graduate Public Health Fellow and Public Health Specialist II, I worked at the University of Buffalo under the supervision of Dr. Gene Morse. I worked on a project titled Rethink (Regional Equitable Health Infrastructure Network) of Western New York which focused on reducing health disparities and creating new models to address inadequate health care access. I helped develop relationships between the seven Federally Qualified Health Centers in Western New York to help create a bridge between community organizations and historically marginalized communities within Western New York.  

During my time working on this project, I developed a qualitative survey to investigate how health centers functioned before the COVID-19 pandemic, how the pandemic altered operations at health facilities, and how we can improve our health centers and community organizations to be better prepared for future pandemics. The survey was administered to four representatives from three Federally Qualified Health Centers in the Buffalo area. We found that there was a reduction in certain services such as HIV/STI screenings, and dental visits/procedures. Although the pandemic altered operations at many Federally Qualified Health Centers in Western New York, it created a bridge between the health centers. During the pandemic, community organizations and community health centers came together to educate our community, provide COVID-19 testing, share resources, and provide vaccinations.

Public Health Specialist/Graduate Public Health Fellow

During my second year as a Graduate Public Health Fellow and Public Health Specialist, I worked as a Community Partner at D'Youville University. I assisted with the academic and research projects associated to the Center for Doctoral Studies and Research. During this time, I also assisted with managing a HRSA grant awarded to D'Youville University and other partners to train individuals in the Buffalo community as Community Health Workers. 

I assisted with data analysis, data coding, creating visualizations, and writing scientific reports, literature reviews, and poster presentations. I worked on a project titled "The Go Buffalo Mom Program" which looked at factors that contributed to pregnant women giving birth to low-birth weight babies and preterm babies. While working on this project, I assisted with the data analysis of 271 participants from the Go Buffalo Mom program and 40,774 pregnant women we used to match to the Go Buffalo Mom participants. I assisted with analyzing pre-term births and NICU admissions amongst the Go Buffalo Mom participants and the matched data set.  

The Community Health Worker Training Project trains individuals from historically marginalized communities in Buffalo to become Community Health Workers. Another aspect of this project includes the training of youth Community Health Workers. Along with the youth Community Health Workers, we developed a survey they could administer to their peers during after school hours and school lunch periods. Our survey addresses issues that high schoolers are experiencing in schools such as violence and discipline, and misconceptions surrounding youth. We have completed 217 youth surveys administered to Buffalo Public School's high school students. I use Excel to input the data collected from the surveys, analyzing the data, and creating visualizations based off the data collected.
