- Conduct American Sign Language interpretation for Deaf and Hard of Hearing patients and their families in various medical settings.
- Facilitate effective communication between medical staff and patients, ensuring accurate and complete understanding of medical procedures, instructions, and information.
- Interpret information in a culturally sensitive and appropriate manner, taking into consideration the specific needs and preferences of the patient.
- Collaborate with medical staff to ensure that all medical procedures and information are accurately communicated to the patient.
- Remain up-to-date on medical terminology and procedures to ensure accurate interpretation.
- Maintain confidentiality and adhere to professional ethics and standards while interpreting.
- Serve as a cultural mediator and advocate for Deaf and Hard of Hearing patients, promoting their rights and ensuring their needs are met.
- Participate in training and professional development opportunities to enhance communication skills and cultural competence.
- Communicate effectively with patients, families, and staff to establish a positive and trusting relationship.
- Provide support and resources to patients and their families, connecting them with relevant community organizations and services when needed.
- Collaborate with other interpreters and team members to ensure consistent and high-quality interpretation services.
- Keep accurate records of interpretation services provided.
- Assist in the development and implementation of policies and procedures related to interpretation services.
- Proactively identify and address potential communication barriers and work towards finding solutions.
- Represent MedStar Health in a professional manner and promote our mission of providing exceptional care and support to our diverse community.
Proficiency In American Sign Language: The Ideal Candidate Should Have A Strong Command Of American Sign Language (Asl) And Be Able To Accurately Interpret Between Asl And Spoken English.
Certification: A Valid Certification From A Recognized Organization Such As The Registry Of Interpreters For The Deaf (Rid) Is Required For This Position. This Ensures That The Interpreter Meets The Necessary Standards Of Skill And Professionalism.
Knowledge Of Medical Terminology: As An Asl Interpreter At Medstar Health, It Is Essential To Have A Good Understanding Of Medical Terminology. This Will Enable The Interpreter To Accurately Convey Complex Medical Information To Deaf And Hard Of Hearing Patients.
Experience In Healthcare Setting: Previous Experience Working As An Asl Interpreter In A Healthcare Setting Is Preferred. This Will Demonstrate An Understanding Of The Unique Challenges And Demands Of Interpreting In A Medical Environment.
Cultural Competency: The Ability To Understand And Navigate The Cultural Nuances Of The Deaf And Hard Of Hearing Community Is Crucial For An Asl Interpreter. This Includes Understanding The Cultural Norms, Values, And Communication Styles Of The Deaf And Hard Of Hearing Population.
