  1. Provide American Sign Language interpretation for Deaf and hard of hearing patients during medical appointments, procedures, and consultations.
  2. Facilitate effective communication between patients, healthcare providers, and other staff members.
  3. Ensure accurate interpretation and translation of medical terminology and information.
  4. Maintain confidentiality and adhere to ethical standards in all interactions.
  5. Collaborate with healthcare team members to ensure Deaf and hard of hearing patients receive appropriate care and treatment.
  6. Advocate for equal access to healthcare for Deaf and hard of hearing individuals.
  7. Stay updated on language and cultural competency in the Deaf community.
  8. Provide support and guidance to healthcare staff on effective communication and working with individuals with hearing loss.
  9. Maintain accurate records of patient interactions and interpretation services provided.
  10. Participate in ongoing training and professional development opportunities to enhance ASL skills and knowledge.
  11. Maintain a professional and empathetic demeanor at all times.
  12. Adapt to changing schedules and prioritize assignments to meet the needs of patients and staff.
  13. Comply with all organizational policies and procedures.
  14. Continuously evaluate and improve interpretation techniques to ensure effective communication.
  15. Collaborate with other ASL interpreters to provide coverage and support as needed.

Job Qualifications
  • Fluency In American Sign Language (Asl): A Qualified Candidate For An Asl Interpreter Job At Medstar Health Should Have A Thorough Understanding And Proficiency In Asl To Effectively Communicate With Deaf And Hard-Of-Hearing Patients.

  • Certification From A Recognized Program: Medstar Health May Require Candidates To Hold A Certificate From An Accredited Asl Interpreter Training Program, Such As The National Interpreter Certification (Nic) Or The Registry Of Interpreters For The Deaf (Rid).

  • Knowledge Of Medical Terminology: As An Asl Interpreter At A Healthcare Facility, It Is Important To Have A Strong Understanding Of Medical Terminology To Accurately Interpret Conversations Between Healthcare Professionals And Patients.

  • Understanding Of Deaf Culture: To Provide Culturally Competent Interpretation Services, A Candidate Should Have A Deep Understanding Of The Deaf Community, Their Values, And Communication Preferences.

  • Experience In A Healthcare Setting: Previous Experience Working As An Asl Interpreter In A Healthcare Setting Is Highly Desirable. This Demonstrates The Candidate's Familiarity With Medical Procedures, Terminology, And Protocols, And Their Ability To Adapt To A Fast-Paced Environment.
