  1. Conduct thorough investigations into unexplained deaths within the Mayo Clinic system.
  2. Collect and analyze evidence, including medical records, witness statements, and physical evidence, to determine cause and manner of death.
  3. Work closely with law enforcement and other medical professionals to gather information and collaborate on cases.
  4. Accurately document all findings and conclusions in written reports.
  5. Utilize specialized forensic techniques and tools to assist in investigations.
  6. Conduct on-site examinations of bodies and evidence, adhering to proper protocol and procedures.
  7. Maintain accurate and organized records of all cases, including evidence and reports.
  8. Provide expert testimony in court cases when necessary.
  9. Stay up-to-date on advancements and changes in the field of forensic science.
  10. Adhere to all ethical and legal standards in the handling of sensitive information and evidence.
  11. Collaborate with other members of the forensic team to share knowledge and improve processes.
  12. Participate in training and development opportunities to enhance skills and knowledge.
  13. Provide support and guidance to junior members of the team.
  14. Continuously strive to improve processes and procedures to ensure the highest quality of care for patients.

Job Qualifications
  • Bachelor's Degree In Forensic Science Or A Related Field: This Education Background Provides A Strong Foundation In The Principles Of Forensic Investigation And The Necessary Knowledge To Conduct Thorough And Accurate Death Investigations.

  • Certification As A Medicolegal Death Investigator (Mdi): This Certification From The American Board Of Medicolegal Death Investigators (Abmdi) Demonstrates The Individual's Competency In The Field And Ensures They Are Up-To-Date On Best Practices And Standards.

  • Experience In Death Investigation: Ideally, Candidates Should Have At Least 2-3 Years Of Experience In A Related Field, Such As Forensic Pathology, Forensic Anthropology, Or Law Enforcement. This Experience Provides A Strong Understanding Of Death Investigation Procedures And Protocols.

  • Strong Attention To Detail And Critical Thinking Skills: Medicolegal Death Investigators Must Be Detail-Oriented And Have The Ability To Analyze Complex Information And Evidence To Determine The Cause And Manner Of Death. They Must Also Be Able To Think Critically And Make Sound Decisions In High-Pressure Situations.

  • Excellent Communication And Interpersonal Skills: As Part Of Their Role, Medicolegal Death Investigators Must Communicate Effectively With A Variety Of Professionals, Including Law Enforcement, Medical Professionals, And Legal Teams. Strong Communication And Interpersonal Skills Are Essential For Conducting Interviews, Documenting Findings, And Presenting Evidence In Court.
