You will work closely with pathologists and other healthcare professionals to ensure accurate and timely completion of autopsies.We are seeking candidates with a degree in mortuary science or a related field, as well as a minimum of 2 years of experience in autopsy procedures.   1. Perform autopsies under the supervision of pathologists and maintain strict adherence to established protocols and procedures.
  2. Prepare and maintain autopsy equipment and supplies, ensuring their cleanliness and proper functioning.
  3. Accurately document and record all findings and observations during the autopsy process.
  4. Assist pathologists in collecting and preserving tissue and organ samples for further analysis.
  5. Work collaboratively with other healthcare professionals to ensure timely and accurate completion of autopsies.
  6. Maintain patient confidentiality and adhere to all HIPAA regulations.
  7. Keep accurate and detailed records of all autopsy procedures, including case information and findings.
  8. Help maintain a safe and clean work environment by following infection control and safety protocols.
  9. Participate in continuing education and training to stay current on advances in autopsy techniques and procedures.
  10. Help maintain an organized and efficient workflow in the autopsy department.
  11. Communicate effectively with pathologists, healthcare team members, and families of the deceased.
  12. Adhere to all hospital policies and procedures and maintain a professional and courteous demeanor at all times.
  13. Assist in the preparation of autopsy reports and provide accurate and detailed information to pathologists.
  14. Maintain and update autopsy equipment and supplies inventory.
  15. Adhere to all regulatory requirements and maintain compliance with state and federal laws.
  16. Provide support for research projects and assist in the collection and preservation of tissue samples.
  17. Attend and participate in departmental and hospital meetings and trainings as required.
  18. Maintain a high level of professionalism and represent the hospital in a positive manner.
  19. Continuously strive to improve processes and procedures to enhance the quality and efficiency of the autopsy department.
  20. Maintain a compassionate and empathetic approach towards patients and their families during the autopsy process.

Job Qualifications
  • Formal Education And Training In Anatomy And Physiology: Candidates For An Autopsy Technician Role At Houston Methodist Should Possess A Degree In Anatomy, Physiology, Biology, Or A Related Field. This Education Provides A Strong Foundation In Understanding The Human Body And Its Systems, Which Is Crucial For Performing Autopsies Accurately.

  • Certification In Mortuary Science: Applicants Should Have Certification In Mortuary Science From An Accredited Institution. This Certification Demonstrates A Thorough Understanding Of Embalming Techniques, Infection Control, And Other Skills Necessary For Handling And Preparing Deceased Individuals For Autopsy.

  • Experience In A Medical Or Forensic Setting: Previous Work Experience In A Medical Or Forensic Environment Is Highly Desirable For An Autopsy Technician Position At Houston Methodist. This Experience Can Include Working In A Morgue, Funeral Home, Hospital, Or Forensic Laboratory, Providing Practical Knowledge Of Handling Deceased Individuals And Understanding The Importance Of Maintaining A Sterile Environment.

  • Familiarity With Autopsy Procedures And Equipment: Candidates Should Have A Strong Understanding Of Autopsy Procedures And Be Comfortable Working With Specialized Equipment Such As Scalpels, Saws, And Forceps. They Should Also Have Knowledge Of Safety Protocols And Be Able To Handle Potentially Hazardous Materials.

  • Attention To Detail And Strong Organizational Skills: An Autopsy Technician Must Have A Keen Eye For Detail And Strong Organizational Skills. This Includes Accurately Documenting Findings, Maintaining Records, And Ensuring Proper Labeling And Storage Of Samples. They Should Also Be Able To Work Efficiently And Effectively In A Fast-Paced Environment, As Autopsies Must Be Completed In A Timely Manner.
