Career counseling is the process of guiding and supporting individuals as they explore career options, develop career goals, and identify and develop the skills and resources necessary to realize these goals. It provides assistance in both educational and career-related decisions, helping the individual identify their unique skills, interests, values, abilities and aptitudes, and match them to appropriate career choices. Career counselor help clients develop job search strategies, set realistic goals, and build a career path that aligns with their interests, skills and values.

Career counselors provide guidance throughout the entire career exploration and decision-making process, from childhood through adulthood, and even into retirement.

Many career counselors are employed in schools, colleges, and universities and use a variety of tools, such as career inventories, assessments, job postings and career development plans to help their clients understand their career options and develop an effective career path.
