Job Description

The City of San Luis Obispo is seeking a skilled and dedicated Communications Technician (Dispatcher) to join our team. As a Communications Technician, you will play a critical role in ensuring the safety and well-being of our community by dispatching emergency services and providing support to first responders. We are looking for an individual who is calm under pressure, has excellent communication skills, and is able to think quickly on their feet.   1. Answer emergency and non-emergency calls, assessing and prioritizing the situation to determine the appropriate response.
  2. Dispatch emergency services including police, fire, and medical personnel to the scene of incidents.
  3. Maintain clear and accurate records of all calls, including time and nature of call, response times, and actions taken.
  4. Gather and relay important information to first responders, including details of the incident, location, and any potential hazards.
  5. Monitor and coordinate multiple radio frequencies and maintain communication with all responding units.
  6. Provide support and guidance to callers in emergency situations, including providing CPR and other life-saving instructions.
  7. Remain calm and professional in high-stress situations, effectively managing multiple tasks and priorities.
  8. Utilize various computer systems and software to input and retrieve information, update databases, and track response times.
  9. Follow established protocols and procedures, adhering to all applicable laws and regulations.
  10. Collaborate with other dispatchers, first responders, and other agencies to ensure a coordinated and efficient response to incidents.
  11. Maintain confidentiality and handle sensitive information in a professional manner.
  12. Participate in ongoing training and professional development to stay current with emergency procedures and protocols.
  13. Provide excellent customer service to all callers and first responders, demonstrating empathy and professionalism in all interactions.
  14. Adhere to strict safety protocols and guidelines to ensure the well-being of all personnel involved in emergency response.
  15. Continuously monitor and assess emergency call volume and adjust staffing levels as needed to maintain efficient and effective operations.

Job Qualifications
  • High School Diploma Or Equivalent: A Minimum Of A High School Diploma Or Equivalent Is Typically Required For A Communications Technician Position At The City Of San Luis Obispo.

  • Prior Dispatch Experience: Previous Experience Working As A Dispatcher Or In A Similar Role Is Often Preferred For This Position. Candidates With Prior Experience Will Have A Better Understanding Of The Job Duties And Be Able To Hit The Ground Running.

  • Strong Communication Skills: As A Communications Technician, You Will Be Responsible For Communicating With Emergency Responders And The Public. Excellent Communication Skills, Both Written And Verbal, Are Essential For This Role.

  • Knowledge Of Emergency Procedures: Knowledge Of Emergency Procedures And Protocols Is Crucial For A Communications Technician. This Includes Understanding How To Handle Different Types Of Emergency Situations And How To Provide Appropriate Assistance.

  • Ability To Work In A Fast-Paced Environment: Dispatching Can Be A High-Stress And Fast-Paced Job, So Candidates Should Be Able To Work Well Under Pressure And Make Quick Decisions. The Ability To Multi-Task And Prioritize Tasks Is Also Important In This Role.
