
Communications Technician (Dispatcher)

- Answer emergency and non-emergency calls, assessing and prioritizing the situation to determine the appropriate response.
- Dispatch emergency services including police, fire, and medical personnel to the scene of incidents.
- Maintain clear and accurate records of all calls, including time and nature of call, response times, and actions taken.
- Gather and relay important information to first responders, including details of the incident, location, and any potential hazards.
- Monitor and coordinate multiple radio frequencies and maintain communication with all responding units.
- Provide support and guidance to callers in emergency situations, including providing CPR and other life-saving instructions.
- Remain calm and professional in high-stress situations, effectively managing multiple tasks and priorities.
- Utilize various computer systems and software to input and retrieve information, update databases, and track response times.
- Follow established protocols and procedures, adhering to all applicable laws and regulations.
- Collaborate with other dispatchers, first responders, and other agencies to ensure a coordinated and efficient response to incidents.
- Maintain confidentiality and handle sensitive information in a professional manner.
- Participate in ongoing training and professional development to stay current with emergency procedures and protocols.
- Provide excellent customer service to all callers and first responders, demonstrating empathy and professionalism in all interactions.
- Adhere to strict safety protocols and guidelines to ensure the well-being of all personnel involved in emergency response.
- Continuously monitor and assess emergency call volume and adjust staffing levels as needed to maintain efficient and effective operations.
High School Diploma Or Equivalent: A Minimum Of A High School Diploma Or Equivalent Is Typically Required For A Communications Technician Position At The City Of San Luis Obispo.
Prior Dispatch Experience: Previous Experience Working As A Dispatcher Or In A Similar Role Is Often Preferred For This Position. Candidates With Prior Experience Will Have A Better Understanding Of The Job Duties And Be Able To Hit The Ground Running.
Strong Communication Skills: As A Communications Technician, You Will Be Responsible For Communicating With Emergency Responders And The Public. Excellent Communication Skills, Both Written And Verbal, Are Essential For This Role.
Knowledge Of Emergency Procedures: Knowledge Of Emergency Procedures And Protocols Is Crucial For A Communications Technician. This Includes Understanding How To Handle Different Types Of Emergency Situations And How To Provide Appropriate Assistance.
