Job Description

  1. Oversee the daily operations and management of the zoo, ensuring all activities align with the mission and values of the City of San Jose.
  2. Develop and implement strategic plans and policies for the care, enrichment, and conservation of the zoo's animal collection.
  3. Ensure the well-being and safety of all animals under your care, including monitoring their health, diet, and behavior.
  4. Work closely with the animal care staff to develop and implement husbandry protocols, enrichment programs, and training plans for the animals.
  5. Collaborate with the zoo's veterinarian and other animal care professionals to maintain the highest standards of animal welfare and health.
  6. Manage the budget for the animal care department, including procurement of supplies and equipment, and ensure all expenses are within allocated funds.
  7. Oversee the design and construction of animal exhibits, ensuring they are safe, functional, and provide appropriate enrichment for the animals.
  8. Maintain accurate records of animal inventory, medical records, and any other necessary documentation.
  9. Lead and mentor a team of animal care staff, providing guidance, training, and performance evaluations.
  10. Collaborate with other departments, such as education and marketing, to develop and implement programs and events that promote animal conservation and education.
  11. Stay updated on industry trends and best practices in animal care, and continuously identify opportunities for improvement and innovation.
  12. Act as a representative of the zoo, building relationships with community partners, media outlets, and visitors to promote the zoo's mission and goals.

Job Qualifications
  • Bachelor's Degree In Biology, Zoology, Or A Related Field.

  • Minimum Of 3 Years Of Experience In Zoo Management Or Animal Care.

  • Knowledge Of Animal Behavior, Husbandry, And Welfare.

  • Experience In Developing And Implementing Animal Enrichment Programs.

  • Strong Leadership And Communication Skills, With The Ability To Work Effectively With A Diverse Team And Community Stakeholders.
