Job Description

We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Senior Public Safety Dispatcher to join our dynamic team at the City of San Jose. As a Senior Public Safety Dispatcher, you will play a crucial role in ensuring the safety and well-being of our community by effectively dispatching emergency services and providing critical support to first responders.   1. Receive and respond to emergency calls, determining the nature and location of the emergency and dispatching appropriate emergency services.
  2. Maintain constant communication with first responders to ensure timely and effective response to emergency situations.
  3. Monitor and coordinate radio and computer-aided dispatch systems, keeping accurate records of all calls and dispatches.
  4. Provide critical support and guidance to first responders on scene, relaying pertinent information and assisting with resource allocation.
  5. Remain calm and composed under high-pressure situations, quickly assessing and prioritizing calls for emergency response.
  6. Utilize effective communication skills to obtain accurate and detailed information from callers, ensuring appropriate resources are dispatched.
  7. Train and mentor junior dispatchers, providing guidance and support as needed.
  8. Maintain knowledge of policies, procedures, and regulations related to emergency dispatching and public safety.
  9. Collaborate with other departments and agencies to coordinate emergency responses and provide timely and accurate information.
  10. Participate in ongoing training and professional development to stay current on best practices and new technologies in the field of emergency dispatching.
  11. Utilize excellent customer service skills to provide support and assistance to callers during non-emergency situations.
  12. Maintain confidentiality and handle sensitive information with discretion and professionalism.
  13. Monitor and respond to alarms and other emergency systems, taking appropriate action as necessary.
  14. Coordinate and dispatch mutual aid resources as needed.
  15. Report any equipment malfunctions or issues to the appropriate parties for prompt resolution.
  16. Maintain accurate records and documentation of all calls and dispatches.
  17. Adhere to established protocols and procedures for emergency dispatching, ensuring the safety and well-being of all parties involved.
  18. Serve as a role model for other dispatchers, demonstrating professionalism, integrity, and dedication to public service.
  19. Act as a liaison between first responders, callers, and other agencies to facilitate effective communication and coordination.
  20. Perform other duties as assigned by superiors to support the overall functioning of the department.

Job Qualifications
  • Minimum Of 5 Years Experience As A Public Safety Dispatcher.

  • Strong Knowledge Of Police And Fire Dispatch Procedures, Including Emergency Response Protocols.

  • Ability To Effectively Multitask And Prioritize In A High-Stress, Fast-Paced Environment.

  • Excellent Communication Skills, Both Written And Verbal, With A High Level Of Professionalism And Customer Service.

  • Proficiency In Using Computer-Aided Dispatch (Cad) Systems And Other Related Technology, As Well As The Ability To Type At Least 40 Words Per Minute.
