Job Description

Welcome to the City of San Diego's Public Library system! We are seeking a highly motivated and experienced Supervising Librarian to join our team and oversee the operations of one of our branches. As a Supervising Librarian, you will play a crucial role in creating a welcoming and inclusive environment for our diverse community, as well as providing excellent customer service and promoting literacy and learning. We are looking for someone with a passion for library services and a strong commitment to serving the public. If you have a Master's degree in Library and Information Science and at least 3 years of supervisory experience in a library setting, we encourage you to apply for this exciting opportunity.

  1. Manage daily operations of assigned library branch, including overseeing staff, budget, and resources to ensure efficient and effective library services.
  2. Provide leadership and guidance to branch staff, fostering a positive and productive work environment.
  3. Develop and implement programs and services that meet the needs and interests of the local community, with a focus on promoting literacy and lifelong learning.
  4. Ensure the library branch is inclusive and welcoming to all members of the community, regardless of age, background, or ability.
  5. Collaborate with other library staff and departments to coordinate programs and services and share best practices.
  6. Stay informed about current trends and developments in library services and make recommendations for updates and improvements.
  7. Develop and maintain positive relationships with community organizations and stakeholders to enhance library services and outreach.
  8. Handle customer inquiries, complaints, and concerns in a timely and professional manner.
  9. Maintain accurate records and statistics related to branch operations and usage.
  10. Work closely with the Library Director and other supervisors to develop and implement strategic plans and goals for the library system.
  11. Adhere to all library policies and procedures, as well as local, state, and federal regulations.
  12. Mentor and train new staff members and provide ongoing professional development opportunities for existing staff.
  13. Stay up-to-date on technology and digital resources and integrate them into library services as appropriate.
  14. Participate in community events and represent the library at meetings and conferences as needed.
  15. Continuously evaluate and assess branch operations and make recommendations for improvements to enhance the overall user experience.
