Job Description

As a Special Event Traffic Controller, you will play a critical role in managing traffic flow and ensuring the safety of event attendees, vendors, and city residents.   1. Manage traffic flow during special events to ensure the safety of attendees, vendors, and residents.
  2. Implement and enforce traffic control plans for special events.
  3. Communicate effectively with event organizers, city officials, and law enforcement to coordinate traffic management efforts.
  4. Monitor and adjust traffic control measures as needed to maintain efficient flow and address any safety concerns.
  5. Ensure compliance with all traffic laws and regulations.
  6. Train and supervise event staff and volunteers on traffic management procedures.
  7. Coordinate with city departments and external agencies to obtain necessary permits and approvals for special events.
  8. Conduct pre-event inspections and post-event evaluations to identify areas for improvement.
  9. Maintain accurate records and reports related to event traffic management.
  10. Stay up-to-date on traffic control techniques and technologies to continuously improve event operations.
  11. Respond to and resolve any traffic-related issues or emergencies during events.
  12. Provide excellent customer service to event attendees and stakeholders.
  13. Adhere to all safety protocols and procedures while on the job.
  14. Collaborate with team members to ensure the overall success of special events.
  15. Perform other duties as assigned by supervisors.

Job Qualifications
  • Valid Traffic Control Certificate: The City Of San Diego Requires All Special Event Traffic Controllers To Possess A Valid Traffic Control Certificate Issued By The California Department Of Transportation (Caltrans). This Certificate Demonstrates Knowledge Of Traffic Control Protocols And Regulations.

  • Strong Communication Skills: Special Event Traffic Controllers Must Have Excellent Verbal Communication Skills To Effectively Communicate With Event Organizers, Drivers, And Pedestrians. They Must Also Be Able To Use Hand Signals And Radio Communication To Coordinate Traffic Flow.

  • Knowledge Of Local Traffic Laws: A Thorough Understanding Of Local Traffic Laws And Regulations Is Essential For A Special Event Traffic Controller. This Includes Knowledge Of Speed Limits, Parking Restrictions, And Road Closures.

  • Ability To Work Under Pressure: Special Events Can Be Chaotic And Unpredictable, So It Is Important For Traffic Controllers To Be Able To Work Well Under Pressure. They Must Be Able To Make Quick Decisions And Adapt To Changing Traffic Conditions To Ensure The Safety Of Event Attendees And The General Public.

  • Physical Fitness: The Job Of A Special Event Traffic Controller Requires Standing For Long Periods Of Time And Directing Traffic In Various Weather Conditions. Therefore, Applicants Must Be Physically Fit And Able To Handle The Demands Of The Job.
