Job Description

Welcome to the City of San Diego! We are currently seeking a highly skilled and dedicated Instrumentation and Control Technician to join our team. As an Instrumentation and Control Technician, you will be responsible for installing, maintaining, and repairing a variety of electrical, electronic, and pneumatic control systems used in our city's infrastructure. This is a critical role in ensuring the safe and efficient operation of our water treatment plants, wastewater treatment plants, and other vital facilities. The ideal candidate will have a strong technical background, excellent problem-solving skills, and a commitment to providing top-notch service to our community.   1. Install, maintain, and repair a variety of electrical, electronic, and pneumatic control systems used in the city's infrastructure.
  2. Troubleshoot and diagnose complex issues with control systems in a timely and efficient manner.
  3. Follow safety protocols and regulations to ensure the safe and proper operation of control systems.
  4. Collaborate with other team members to coordinate maintenance and repairs and ensure minimal disruption to operations.
  5. Monitor control systems and make necessary adjustments to maintain optimal performance.
  6. Keep accurate records of maintenance and repair work performed.
  7. Stay up-to-date with new technologies and advancements in the field of instrumentation and control to continuously improve processes.
  8. Provide excellent customer service to city departments and community members by responding promptly to requests and resolving issues effectively.
  9. Maintain inventory of equipment and supplies, and recommend purchases as needed.
  10. Train and mentor new technicians to ensure proper knowledge and skills are acquired.
  11. Adhere to departmental policies and procedures, as well as local and state regulations.
  12. Collaborate with external contractors and vendors as needed.
  13. Participate in on-call rotation for emergency repairs and maintenance.
  14. Keep work area clean and organized to ensure a safe and productive work environment.
  15. Perform other related duties as assigned by supervisor.

Job Qualifications
  • Education And Training: A Minimum Of An Associate's Degree In Instrumentation And Control Technology Or A Related Field Is Required. Additionally, Candidates Should Have Completed Specialized Training Or Certification Programs In Electrical And Mechanical Systems.

  • Experience: Candidates Should Have At Least 2-3 Years Of Experience In Instrumentation And Control Technology, Specifically In A Municipal Or Utility Setting. Experience With Scada Systems, Plc Programming, And Troubleshooting Control Systems Is Highly Desirable.

  • Technical Skills: Strong Technical Skills In Electrical And Mechanical Systems, As Well As Experience With Various Software And Hardware Used In Instrumentation And Control, Are Essential For This Role. Familiarity With Industry Standards And Regulations, Such As Nfpa, Nec, And Osha, Is Also Important.

  • Communication And Teamwork: As An Essential Member Of A Larger Team, The Ability To Communicate Effectively And Work Collaboratively With Colleagues, Contractors, And Other Departments Is Crucial. The Ability To Clearly Document And Communicate Technical Issues And Solutions Is Also Important.

  • Attention To Detail And Problem Solving: The Role Of An Instrumentation And Control Technician Requires A High Level Of Attention To Detail And The Ability To Troubleshoot And Solve Complex Problems. Candidates Should Have A Strong Understanding Of Electrical And Mechanical Principles And Be Able To Apply Them In Real-World Scenarios.
