Welcome to the City of Oakland's Aquatics Department! We are currently seeking a dedicated and enthusiastic Water Safety Instructor to join our team. As a Water Safety Instructor, you will play a crucial role in providing our community with the necessary skills to enjoy water activities safely. We are looking for individuals who are certified and experienced in instructing water safety and have a strong commitment to ensuring the well-being of our patrons.   1. Develop and implement water safety curriculum for various age groups and skill levels.
  2. Teach and demonstrate proper water safety techniques, including swimming strokes, floating, and emergency procedures.
  3. Conduct regular safety checks of the pool and surrounding areas to ensure a safe environment for all patrons.
  4. Monitor and supervise all swimmers to ensure adherence to safety rules and regulations.
  5. Assist with the planning and coordination of aquatic events and programs.
  6. Maintain accurate records of attendance, progress, and certifications of all participants.
  7. Communicate effectively with parents, guardians, and other staff members regarding safety concerns and program updates.
  8. Stay current on all water safety and lifeguard certifications and participate in ongoing training and development.
  9. Work collaboratively with other staff members to maintain a clean and organized aquatic facility.
  10. Adhere to all departmental policies and procedures, including emergency protocols and incident reporting.
  11. Provide exceptional customer service to all patrons, addressing any concerns or issues in a timely and professional manner.
  12. Serve as a positive role model for participants, promoting safety, respect, and good sportsmanship.
  13. Assist in the recruitment and training of new water safety instructors.
  14. Adhere to all safety guidelines and protocols set forth by the City of Oakland and regulatory agencies.
  15. Continuously evaluate and improve the water safety program to ensure its effectiveness and relevance to the community.

Job Qualifications
  • American Red Cross Water Safety Instructor Certification: A Qualified Candidate For This Position Should Possess A Current American Red Cross Water Safety Instructor (Wsi) Certification. This Certification Demonstrates A Thorough Understanding Of Water Safety Principles And Effective Teaching Methods.

  • Lifeguarding Certification: A Water Safety Instructor Must Also Hold A Current Lifeguarding Certification From A Nationally Recognized Organization Such As The American Red Cross, Ymca, Or Ellis & Associates. This Certification Ensures That The Candidate Is Trained In Lifesaving Techniques And Can Respond In Emergency Situations.

  • Teaching Experience: To Be Successful In This Role, The Candidate Should Have Experience Teaching Swimming Lessons To Individuals Of All Ages And Skill Levels. This Could Include Experience As A Swim Instructor, Lifeguard, Or Camp Counselor.

  • Excellent Communication Skills: As A Water Safety Instructor, Effective Communication Is Crucial In Ensuring The Safety And Success Of Students. The Ideal Candidate Should Have Strong Verbal And Written Communication Skills, As Well As The Ability To Provide Clear And Concise Instructions.

  • Knowledge Of Water Safety Regulations: The City Of Oakland Has Specific Regulations And Guidelines For Water Safety At Its Facilities. A Qualified Candidate Should Have A Thorough Understanding Of These Regulations And Be Able To Enforce Them To Ensure The Safety Of All Participants.
