- Conduct regular and thorough inspections of buildings and structures within the city to ensure compliance with building codes and regulations.
- Document and report any violations or safety hazards found during inspections.
- Review building plans and permit applications to ensure they meet all necessary requirements.
- Communicate with property owners, contractors, and other stakeholders to address any issues or concerns related to building code compliance.
- Keep up-to-date with any changes or updates to building codes and regulations.
- Provide guidance and assistance to property owners and contractors to help them understand and comply with building codes and regulations.
- Maintain accurate records and documentation of all building inspections and related activities.
- Collaborate with other city departments and agencies to address building safety concerns and coordinate inspections.
- Participate in training and professional development opportunities to stay current with industry standards and best practices.
- Serve as a knowledgeable and approachable resource for the community regarding building safety and code compliance.
- Investigate complaints and concerns related to building safety and take appropriate action to address them.
- Conduct follow-up inspections to ensure that any violations or safety hazards have been corrected.
- Assist with the development and implementation of new building codes and regulations as needed.
- Uphold the values and mission of the City of Jersey City in all interactions and activities.
- Provide excellent customer service and maintain a professional and courteous demeanor at all times.
Education And Training: A Minimum Of A High School Diploma Or Equivalent Is Required, With Preference Given To Candidates With A Degree In Related Fields Such As Architecture, Engineering, Or Construction Management. Additional Training And Certification In Building Codes And Inspection Techniques Is Also Preferred.
Experience: Candidates Should Have At Least 3-5 Years Of Experience In The Construction Industry, With A Focus On Building Inspection And Code Compliance. Experience In A Municipal Government Setting Is Also Desirable.
Knowledge Of Building Codes: A Thorough Understanding Of Local And State Building Codes, Including The International Building Code (Ibc) And International Residential Code (Irc), Is Essential For This Role. Candidates Should Also Be Familiar With Other Relevant Codes And Regulations, Such As Plumbing, Electrical, And Fire Safety Codes.
Attention To Detail: Building Inspectors Must Have A Keen Eye For Detail To Identify Potential Code Violations And Ensure That Construction Projects Are In Compliance With All Applicable Codes And Regulations. This Requires Strong Observational Skills And The Ability To Accurately Document Findings.
Communication And Customer Service Skills: Building Inspectors Must Be Able To Effectively Communicate With Contractors, Homeowners, And Other Stakeholders To Explain Code Requirements And Address Any Concerns Or Questions. Strong Customer Service Skills Are Also Important For Maintaining Positive Relationships With The Community.
