- Maintain and beautify designated sections of the California Institute of Technology campus through gardening, landscaping, and horticultural practices.
- Ensure that all plants, flowers, and trees are healthy and well-maintained by watering, fertilizing, pruning, and pest control.
- Collaborate with the groundskeeping team to develop and implement landscaping plans and designs for assigned areas.
- Monitor and maintain irrigation systems to ensure proper hydration for plants.
- Identify and address any issues or concerns with plants, trees, or landscaping elements.
- Utilize knowledge of seasonal planting and maintenance techniques to keep the campus looking vibrant and appealing year-round.
- Operate and maintain gardening equipment and tools, ensuring they are in good working condition.
- Keep accurate records of plant inventory, maintenance schedules, and any other relevant data.
- Communicate effectively with other team members and superiors to coordinate tasks and ensure efficient use of resources.
- Demonstrate a strong commitment to sustainability by implementing environmentally-friendly practices in landscaping and gardening.
- Provide excellent customer service to students, staff, and visitors by responding to inquiries and addressing any concerns promptly.
- Adhere to all safety guidelines and regulations while performing gardening and landscaping tasks.
- Attend training sessions and workshops to continuously improve horticultural knowledge and skills.
- Maintain a clean and organized work area, including storage areas for equipment and supplies.
- Represent the California Institute of Technology in a professional and positive manner at all times.
A Degree In Horticulture Or A Related Field: A Section Gardener At Caltech Should Have A Strong Foundation In Horticulture Principles And Practices, As Well As A Thorough Understanding Of Plant Biology.
Experience In Maintaining Gardens And Landscapes: Candidates For This Position Should Have A Proven Track Record Of Successfully Managing And Maintaining Gardens And Landscapes, Preferably In A Similar Institutional Setting.
Knowledge Of Irrigation Systems And Equipment: The Section Gardener Will Be Responsible For Managing The Irrigation Systems And Equipment On Campus, So A Thorough Understanding Of How These Systems Work And How To Troubleshoot Issues Is Essential.
Experience With Plant Identification And Pest Management: Caltech's Campus Boasts A Diverse Collection Of Plants, So The Section Gardener Should Have Experience With Identifying Different Species And Managing Common Pests And Diseases.
Ability To Work Independently And As Part Of A Team: The Section Gardener Will Often Work Independently, But Also Collaborate With Other Members Of The Campus Grounds Team. Therefore, Strong Teamwork And Communication Skills Are Necessary For This Role.
