Job Description

Welcome to the City of Pittsburgh's Engineering Technician 3 position for Work Zone Traffic Control! We are seeking a highly skilled and motivated individual to join our team and help ensure the safety of our city's roads and construction sites. As an Engineering Technician 3, you will play a crucial role in planning, designing, and maintaining temporary traffic control measures to protect drivers, pedestrians, and workers in and around work zones.   1. Develop and implement effective work zone traffic control plans in accordance with local, state, and federal regulations.
  2. Conduct site assessments to identify potential hazards and determine appropriate traffic control measures.
  3. Design and review traffic control plans for construction projects, road maintenance, and special events.
  4. Collaborate with engineers, project managers, and other team members to ensure the safe and efficient flow of traffic in work zones.
  5. Monitor and adjust traffic control devices, such as signs and barricades, to maintain safety and compliance.
  6. Maintain accurate records of work zone traffic control activities, including documentation of changes and updates.
  7. Conduct training and provide guidance to construction crews and other personnel on proper work zone traffic control procedures.
  8. Conduct regular inspections of work zones to ensure compliance with traffic control plans and regulations.
  9. Stay informed of industry standards and best practices related to work zone traffic control and make recommendations for improvement.
  10. Respond to and resolve any issues or complaints related to work zone traffic control, including communicating with the public and addressing safety concerns.
  11. Maintain and operate equipment, such as traffic cones and portable traffic signals, used for work zone traffic control.
  12. Adhere to all safety protocols and regulations while working in or near active construction zones.
  13. Collaborate with other departments and agencies, such as the Department of Transportation and law enforcement, to coordinate work zone traffic control efforts.
  14. Attend meetings and provide updates on work zone traffic control plans and activities.
  15. Assist with other engineering projects and tasks as needed.

Job Qualifications
  • Minimum Of 3 Years Of Experience In A Similar Role: A Candidate For The Engineering Technician 3 Position At The City Of Pittsburgh Should Have At Least 3 Years Of Experience In Work Zone Traffic Control. This Experience Should Include Knowledge Of Traffic Control Devices, Traffic Signal Systems, And Road Construction Practices.

  • Knowledge Of Relevant Laws And Regulations: The Ideal Candidate Should Have A Thorough Understanding Of Local, State, And Federal Laws And Regulations Related To Work Zone Traffic Control. This Includes Knowledge Of The Manual On Uniform Traffic Control Devices (Mutcd) And The Pennsylvania Department Of Transportation (Penndot) Regulations.

  • Certification In Work Zone Traffic Control: The City Of Pittsburgh Requires Candidates For This Position To Have A Valid Certification In Work Zone Traffic Control. This May Include Certifications Such As The American Traffic Safety Services Association (Atssa) Traffic Control Technician (Tct) Or The Penndot Work Zone Flagger.

  • Strong Communication And Interpersonal Skills: The Engineering Technician 3 Will Be Responsible For Interacting With Various Stakeholders, Including Contractors, Engineers, And City Officials. Therefore, Excellent Communication And Interpersonal Skills Are Essential For This Role.

  • Ability To Work In A Fast-Paced And Dynamic Environment: The Engineering Technician 3 Will Be Required To Work In A Fast-Paced And Dynamic Environment, Often With Tight Deadlines. The Ideal Candidate Should Be Able To Handle Pressure And Adapt To Changing Situations While Still Maintaining A High Level Of Accuracy And Attention To Detail.
