Job Description

As a lifeguard, you will play a vital role in ensuring the safety of patrons at our local pools and beaches.   1. Ensure the safety of patrons at all times by actively monitoring the pool or beach area and responding quickly to any potential emergency situations.
  2. Enforce all safety rules and regulations to prevent accidents and maintain a safe environment for all patrons.
  3. Provide excellent customer service by greeting and interacting with patrons in a friendly and professional manner.
  4. Maintain constant communication with fellow lifeguards and other staff members to ensure a coordinated and efficient response to any emergency situations.
  5. Perform regular checks of pool equipment and report any malfunctions or safety concerns to the appropriate supervisor.
  6. Maintain accurate records of pool usage, incidents, and any other required documentation.
  7. Assist in the setup and breakdown of pool equipment and supplies.
  8. Attend and actively participate in all required trainings and meetings.
  9. Act as a positive role model for patrons by following all facility rules and regulations and promoting a safe and welcoming environment.
  10. Maintain a professional appearance and attitude at all times.
  11. Assist in the cleaning and maintenance of the pool area and surrounding facilities.
  12. Continuously educate yourself on current lifeguarding techniques and procedures to ensure the highest level of safety for all patrons.
  13. Help to create a positive and inclusive atmosphere for all patrons, including those with special needs or disabilities.
  14. Collaborate with other lifeguards and staff members to develop and implement emergency action plans and procedures.
  15. Any other duties as assigned by the supervisor.

Job Qualifications
  • Certification: A Valid Lifeguard Certification From A Nationally Recognized Organization, Such As The American Red Cross Or The Ymca, Is Required For The Position.

  • First Aid And Cpr Training: Lifeguards Must Be Trained In First Aid And Cpr, As They May Need To Respond To Emergencies And Provide Immediate Assistance To Individuals In Need.

  • Physical Fitness: Lifeguards Must Be Physically Fit And Able To Perform The Duties Of The Job, Which May Include Swimming, Rescuing Individuals In The Water, And Performing Regular Pool Maintenance Tasks.

  • Communication Skills: Strong Verbal Communication Skills Are Essential For A Lifeguard, As They Need To Effectively Communicate With Patrons, Coworkers, And Emergency Responders In A Calm And Assertive Manner.

  • Experience: While Not Always Required, Previous Experience As A Lifeguard Or In A Related Field, Such As Swim Instruction Or Water Safety, Is Highly Valued By The City Of Oakland For Their Part-Time Lifeguard Positions.
